Got a record player for Christmas one year and there were about fifty 45rpm records included. Some I never heard of but this was one I liked.

Dickie Moore was an Our Gang regular in 1932 and 1933, becoming one of the troupe's lead male characters. Dickie was a clean-cut, likable boy who often played the 'straight man' parts against more comical characters. In addition to his Our Gang work, Moore is often remembered for his portrayal of the title character in the 1933 adaptation of Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist and as Marlene Dietrich's son in Blonde Venus (1932).
He is also famous for giving Shirley Temple her first onscreen kiss, in Miss Annie Rooney (1942). With dozens of news cameras present to record the 'end-of-innocence kiss,' Moore has described the incident as the most terrifying of his life. (It was the first time in his 17 years that he had kissed any girl!) Moore was less successful as a teenage and young-adult actor, and retired from the screen in the early 1950s. Moore went on to teach and write books about acting, edit Equity magazine, perform on Broadway, in stock, and on television. He also wrote and directed for TV, produced an Oscar-nominated short film (The Boy and the Eagle), and produced industrial films. Moore, who married actress Jane Powell in 1988, passed away on September 10, 2015--just two days before his ninetieth birthday.

I posted Venus by the Shocking Blue and surprised many that it was sung by a woman. Believe it or not the lead vocals for the Soul Survivors are white.

Shocking Blue was a Dutch rock band from The Hague, the Netherlands, formed in 1967. Their biggest hit, "Venus," went to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in February 1970, and the band had sold 13.5 million discs by 1973, but the group disbanded in 1974. Bet you thought it was a male vocal like me-NOPE! Mariska Veres had a very powerful contralto voice, distinct from other females. She did not smoke, drink, or experiment with drugs. When she joined Shocking Blue she made it clear to the other band members that romantic relationships were not going to happen.

One 'battle of the sexes' sports event that has curiously not gotten much attention was the impromptu beatdown that an obscure male German professional tennis player named Karsten Braasch handed to both Serena and Venus Williams during the 1998 Australian Open. At that event, the Williams sisters confidently walked into the Australian ATP office and boldly announced that either one of them could beat a top-200 male player. The 30-year-old Braasch, who had been ranked 38th in the world at his peak in 1994 but had dropped to 203rd by 1998, accepted the sisters' crazy challenge. On January 26, 1998, with no advance publicity, the three of them went to a distant practice court to play a couple of sets. There were no officials and no TV cameras present--and only a smattering of spectators who happened to wander near the court by chance. Serena, then 16, was blasted 6-1 by Braasch. Venus, a year older than her sister, fared only slightly better, losing 6-2. Braasch gleefully rubbed in his dominance by smoking cigarettes and drinking beers during the changeovers. Serena, who would win the women's title at the U.S. Open later that year, was humbled by the shellacking. "It was extremely hard," she told reporters who descended upon the challenge match. "I didn't know it would be that hard. I hit shots that would have been winners on the WTA Tour, and he got to them easily." When Braasch was asked if either of the Williams sisters could beat a top male player, he opined, "Against anyone in the top 500, no chance--because I was playing like [number] 600 today."

Hollywood legend Peter O'Toole died peacefully in his sleep last night. Peter had been in countless films -- including "Lawrence of Arabia", "Goodbye, Mr Chips" and "Venus" -- and holds the record for most Oscar nominations without ever winning.
He was given an honorary Academy Award in 2010 to make up for it.
