Traci Lords Scandal 1986 One of the more salacious scandals of the 1980s involved pornographic movie star Nora Louise Kuzma, better known to skin-flick aficionados as Traci Lords. In July 1986, during a comprehensive federal investigation into the pornography industry, authorities received an anonymous tip: Traci Lords, the hugely popular actress, had just turned 18 years old--meaning her meteoric two-year porn career had begun at the illegal and tender age of 16, perhaps even 15. It was true. Her mother's ex-boyfriend had provided Traci with a fake ID that added more than five years to Lords' age, giving her a November 1962 birthdate instead of May 1968. (Her physical attributes so belied her true age that Lords was also able to illegally obtain a California driver's license and a passport.) Mom's ex arranged some nude modelling gigs for Lords, including photos for Penthouse. Within a short time, Lords was Penthouse's Pet of the Month--an issue that outsold all others in the publication's history. She quickly graduated to hard-core films at a time when the home video market was exploding. Lords appeared in about 80 porn flicks and became enormously popular for her enthusiastic performances. 'I get paid for doing things I like,' Lords told an interviewer. Lords claims she only made 21 films (and earned about $35,000 for her services), but dozens of other movies were created from outtakes and reused footage. According to porn industry insiders, however, Lords was making six movies a month, demanding and getting $1,000 per day from producers (about twice the going rate for hard-core porn actresses at the time). Some sources claim Lords made over $1 million from her XXX-rated movies--and even had video companies give her $10,000 a month and provide her with a furnished apartment and a Mercedes. Before the scandal broke, her movies were outselling her nearest rival's by a 10:1 ratio. One film, 'Traci, I Love You,' was made in Europe a few days after her eighteenth birthday by her own newly formed production company, and is thus the only porno movie of hers that can be legally obtained or viewed in North America. Some of her 'banned' films are still available in Europe where laws and the age of sexual consent vary. (In France, for example, it is illegal for someone under the age of 18 to appear in a pornographic movie, but the film itself is not illegal.) The huge scandal resulted in more stringent age verification for porn participants that still exist today. Because of accusations that producers had lured Lords into the business knowing she was a minor, the entire adult film industry verged on collapse. However, Lords had also fooled the federal government with the same fake I.D. to get a U.S. passport, so prosecution efforts were halted. Suspicion lingers that it was Lords herself who tipped off authorities to her true age in order to increase her fame and eliminate her old films from the marketplace once she began her own production company. Lords, shown here in a 2008 photo, has pursued a career as a 'serious actress' since 1986. She has appeared in various films and TV sitcoms, usually typecast as 'the bad girl.'

D-Day Crossword Puzzle Security Breach In the spring of 1944 the Allies were poised to land in German-occupied France. The only uncertainty was where and when. Tight security over the enormous operation was paramount. (One American general was demoted and sent back to the Unites States for merely speculating on an invasion date at a social gathering.) Accordingly, British Intelligence was aghast when several key code names linked to the D-Day invasion began appearing as answers in the Daily Telegraph crossword puzzles in the month before the June 6 invasion. The code names of all five beaches (Gold, Sword, Juno, Omaha, Utah), the portable harbors (Mulberry), the naval support (Neptune), and the entire operation (Overlord) appeared! Agents questioned Leonard Dawe, a 54-year-old local schoolmaster, who had submitted the puzzles. Dawe didn't know what the fuss was about. He told the agents the words simply fit the puzzles. For years the incident was regarded as a remarkable coincidence. However, in 1984, one of Dawe's former students at the Strand School shed more light on the subject. Ronald French, who was 14 in 1944, said Dawe routinely had his students fill in crossword grids as a mental exercise. Dawe kept the especially good grids, wrote accompanying clues, and submitted them to the Daily Telegraph. The boys often socialized with the Allied troops stationed nearby and likely acquired the words by overhearing their conversations. There is no evidence that Dawe was a German agent, nor is there any evidence that the Germans benefitted from this odd security breach.

Timely Death of Bunny Ryan 1979 Elizabeth (Bunny) Ryan was an American tennis star who specialized in doubles. Shown here in a 1923 photo, Ryan won a combined total of 19 women's doubles and mixed doubles titles at Wimbledon from 1914 through 1934. She held the record for most Wimbledon titles until 1979. That year, Billie Jean King was attempting to win her 20th title. King was paired with Martina Navratilova in the women's doubles--and Navratilova was almost unbeatable at that time. King's 20th title was virtually assured--and this did not please 87-year-old Elizabeth Ryan one bit. Ryan constantly snubbed King whenever King tried to approach her. 'She [King] is trying to steal my record,' Ryan told friends. When NBC's Bud Collins tried to arrange an interview with King and Ryan together, Ryan staunchly refused. King and Navratilova did win the 1979 Wimbledon women's doubles title on July 7--but Ryan was not around to see it. It what can only be described as a timely death, Ryan collapsed on the Wimbledon grounds the day before and died.

New Zealand Judge Orders Name Change For Girl You can't make this stuff up... From July 2008: A judge in New Zealand, fed up with parents bestowing bizarre names on their offspring, has given a girl named Talula Does the Hula From Hawaii the chance to change hers. Judge Rob Murfitt has ruled that the girl, 9, become a ward of the court so her name can be changed. The girl was involved in a custody battle between her separated parents. In his ruling made public Thursday, Murfitt expressed concern at the 'very poor judgment' shown by the parents in selecting the moniker. 'It makes a fool of the child and sets her up with a social disability and handicap, unnecessarily,' said Murfitt. The court heard that the girl was so embarrassed by her name that she never even told her friends. Instead, she told people to call her K, her lawyer told the family court in the port city of New Plymouth, located on the west coast of the North Island. The ruling was made in February 2008, but became public five months later when it was published in law reports. The girl's new name will not be made public in order to protect her identity. In his ruling, Murfitt cited a list of strange names given to children in New Zealand. He said names blocked by registration officials included Yeah Detroit, Keenan Got Lucy, Twisty Poi, Fish and Chips, and Sex Fruit. However, Number 16 Bus Shelter and Violence were allowed. New Zealand law does not allow names that would cause offence to a reasonable person, among other conditions, said Brian Clarke, the registrar general of births, deaths and marriages. Clarke said officials usually talk to parents who propose unusual names to convince them of the potential embarrassment for the child.

Banana-Blade Hockey Sticks The blades on hockey sticks used to be completely straight. In 1927, Cy Denneny of the Ottawa Senators briefly experimented with a blade he had curved using hot water. Nothing came of it. Four decades later, Stan Mikita of the Chicago Blackhawks partially broke the blade of one of his sticks during a practice. He took a shot with it for kicks. Voila! The puck did some fancy dancing through the air much like a knuckleball does. Mikita and teammate Bobby Hull began experimenting with different versions--some with ridiculous curves they dubbed 'banana blades.' Although they had some obvious drawbacks--accurate passing and backhand shots were much more difficult--the warped pieces of wood immediately became formidable weapons. Of course, the banana blades were universally despised by goalies because the netminders had no idea where the puck was headed. (In all honesty, neither did the shooters!) In an era when some goalies didn't wear masks, there was a serious risk of injury, so the extreme blades were outlawed. Today a curve of only 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch is permitted in organized hockey. A hockey ref once told me that if you put a dime on its edge and it fits under the blade of a stick, the curve is illegal.

Barney Miller Actor Steve Landesberg dies Steve Landesberg may have been best known for his role as the intellectual and sometimes annoying Detective Sgt. Arthur Dietrich on the long-running 1970s cop comedy "Barney Miller." But younger audiences knew him too for a slew of recent parts such as the doctor on the 2008 hit movie "Forgetting Sarah Marshall." The veteran actor died Monday at age 65, his agent, Jeffrey Leavitt, told The Associated Press apparently from cancer.
