Miss Teen South Carolina 2007 I don't normally post recent clips, but this one has to be seen by the widest possible audience. Lauren Caitlin Upton, Miss Teen South Carolina, attempts to answer a question about Americans' poor geography skills. In less than a minute watch her disintegrate into an incoherent babbling bimbo. There's just no other way to describe it.

Buster Brown Shoes oh, i have a HORRIBLE story to share with you about Buster Browns!! YEA, HUH? When my Dad was little, his Uncle gave him a little goat . . (that's the good part) they were very poor and it was time for Dad to get a new outfit. They didn't have any money, so HIS MOTHER sold the goat unbeknownst to my Dad . . Daddy came home with this incredibly uncomfortable Buster Brown outfit . . and THEN couldn't find his little knot-headed buddy!! Of all the nerve!! Bothered him all his life . . So one year for Christmas, i got him a life-sized carved goat that a 'fellow' whittled out of wood, and i put it outside the picture window at my parent's house with a big red bow on it. On Christmas morning when my sister and I got down there (now in our 40's) and we had opened all our presents, i went and opened the curtains . .TA DA!! Dad was THRILLED . .Mom is STILL mad because it's an eye sore!! LOL

Shipwreck Kelly - Flagpole Sitter One of the weirder phenomena of the 1920s was the popularity of flagpole-sitting, a strange publicity gimmick mastered by Alvin (Shipwreck) Kelly. In 1924 Kelly was hired by a Hollywood press agent to promote a new film by sitting on the flagpole above the Los Angeles theater where the movie was playing. He remained there for 13 hours and 13 days, starting a bizarre national craze. By 1928 Kelly was earning over $100 per day for his stunts--fantastic money in those days. The apex of Kelly's career occurred in 1930 when he spent 1,177 hours atop a 125-foot flagpole at Atlantic City's Steel Pier. The Great Depression, however, diminished the public's appetite for such stunts. By the end of 1930 Kelly's stunts were earning him little more than pocket change. His last public appearance of any significance occurred in 1939. Broke and on welfare, Kelly dropped dead in 1952 while walking between two parked cars in New York City. Clutched tightly in one arm was a scrapbook containing clippings and momentos from his glory days as King of the Flagpole Sitters.

BETTY GRABLE SHOWER OF STARS 1954 This wonderful Musical Variety aired live once per month in the time period normally occupied by the dramatic anthology series Climax! Both were sponsored by the Chrysler Corporation and shared the same host, Mr. William Lundigan. There were occasional plays and lots of music and skits. The most familiar face on the Shower of Stars was Jack Benny who appeared in several shows. Grable appeared in the Premiere Episode. . .

Neil Sedaka on Ive Got a Secret Here's an interesting clip. Pop singer Neil Sedaka appears on I've Got a Secret in 1965. His secret? He's going to the Soviet Union to perform as a classical pianist. Apparently he never got there. The Russians found out Sedaka was a rock and roll idol and barred him from entering the country! What a paranoid lot they were!

Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II - 1953 I was surprised to discover no one had yet posted a clip of Queen Elizabeth's coronation--so I took the liberty of doing it. On February 6, 1952, George VI, the reigning monarch of the British Commonwealth, died from smoking-related health problems. He was just 56 years old. By the rules of succession, his eldest daughter, 25-year-old Elizabeth, became the new Queen. She was making a goodwill tour of Kenya when she learned she was the new British monarch. Her ceremonial coronation took more than a year to plan. It finally occurred on June 2, 1953. Here is a four-minute clip of her receiving the various symbols of power. Because coronations happen so rarely--and this is the most recent--few people realize how religious the ceremony is. (The monarch is supposed to be "the Defender of the Faith.") Recorded for posterity in spectacularly rich color, the film looks like it could have been shot yesterday--not in 1953. Because satellite broadcasting was not yet a reality, special arrangements were made for North American TV viewers to see the event as soon as possible. The undeveloped film of the ceremony was put aboard a Canadian fighter jet. A technician developed the film in a dark room while the plane was over the Atlantic. About five hours after the event occurred, the airplane landed in Canada. The freshly developed film was rushed to a CBC broadcast studio where it aired throughout Canada. American networks picked up the CBC's feed. Elizabeth II recently celebrated her 89th birthday. If she lives past the first week of September 2015, she will surpass Queen Victoria (her great-great-grandmother) as the longest-reigning monarch in British history. There's no reason to believe she won't attain that milestone. By all accounts Elizabeth II enjoys excellent health, she is still quite active, and her mother lived to be 102 years old.

The Unknown Comic The Unknown Comic (who was really Murray Langston) was an occasional non-competing act on The Gong Show. I've said it before: It was the seventies; you had to be there.

Old Tandy 100 Ad The Tandy 100 was actually a computer made in Japan by Kyocera. All the ROM programs were written by Microsoft, and even a few of them were written by Bill Gates himself! These programs included a text editor, a telecommunication program, which used the built-in modem (300 baud), and a rather good version of BASIC...no big surprise there.
