Cass Elliot Death 1974 Cassandra (Cass) Elliot had the best success of any of the four members of The Mamas and the Papas after the group split up. She had solo hits with 'Dream A Little Dream of Me' and 'Make Your Own Kind of Music.' In the summer of 1974 she embarked on a tour of England where she played two weeks of sold-out gigs. Her terrific voice earned her a standing ovation each night. On July 29, 1974, after her tour had ended, Elliot died in her sleep in a London flat. She was 32. Immediately after her death, gossip columns speculated that Elliot died from choking on a ham sandwich. Speaking to the press shortly after her body was discovered, the police noted that a partly eaten sandwich had been found in her room and speculated that Elliot may have choked while eating it. When an autopsy was performed, no food was found in her trachea and the cause of death was determined to have been a heart attack. But by then, the story was already making the rounds and the real cause of Elliot's death was rarely discussed. The incorrect story has, sadly, remained a part of popular culture as an urban myth.

Family Affair 1966 Uncle Bill meets Jody for the first time and Sissy for the first time in many years. This wonderful family oriented series which ran from 1966-1971 explored the trials of well-to-do civil engineer and bachelor Bill Davis (Brian Keith), as he attempted to raise his brother's orphaned children in his luxury New York City apartment. Davis's stuffy English butler Mr. Giles French (Sebastian Cabot), also had adjustments to make as he was usually saddled with the responsibility of caring for 15-year-old Cissy (Kathy Garver) and the 6-year-old twins, Jody (Johnny Whitaker) and Buffy (Anissa Jones). Brian Keith was nominated for an Emmy three times for his role as Uncle Bill. On August 28, 1976, after partying all night at the beach town of Oceanside, California, Anissa Jones was found dead in the bedroom of a friend's house, she was only 18. The coroner's report listed her death as accidental drug overdose. Found in her system were cocaine, PCP, methaqualone and Seconal. The coroner who examined Jones reported that she had died from one of the most severe drug overdoses he had ever seen. In 1984, her brother, Paul Jones, also died of a drug overdose.

December 1963 Oh What a Night Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons in 1975. At the time this song was recorded, the group had gone through many changes and Valli was the only member remaining from the four that had recorded all those hits during the 1960s. The song itself was actually co-written by another member from those successful years in the 60s, Bob Gaudio, who left the group in 1972 as a performer but continued to help write and produce for them. Their new drummer, Gerri Polci sang the lead on this song, while Valli's solo only consisted of the lyric "Oh I, I got a funny feelin' when she walked in the room, Yeah my, as I recall it ended much too soon." Around this time, however, Valli did have a successful solo career with the songs "My Eyes Adored You", "Swearin' To God" and "Grease".

The Breakfast Club You've gotta love this movie!! This is one of the best, if not THE best 80's film there is. The fact is, every teen character in this movie can be related to someone you probably knew in high-school. If you were a child of the 80's, you will surely agree that this is a representative cross-section of every high school in North America. The geek, the jock, the outcast, the rich pretty-girl snob, and the future criminal. They all exist, to some degree or another, in the classrooms of every high school.

Censored Shirley Temple Film Curly Top (1935) was one of Shirley Temple's first feature films for 20th Century Fox. In it Shirley played a lovable, spunky orphan. The film is best known for Shirley's famous 'Animal Crackers' song. Movie scholars also remember Curly Top as the film that featured a controversial Temple hula dance that ended up on the cutting room floor. What did seven-year-old Shirley do to ire the censors? She wore a grass hula skirt but no top! The public didn't see little Shirley's bare torso until the late 1970s when the clip was included in the syndicated TV program 'That's Hollywood!' The hula scene is not included in DVDs or videotapes.

National Police Gazette The National Police Gazette, often simply referred to as the Police Gazette, was an American newspaper founded in 1845 by two journalists, Enoch E. Camp and George Wilkes. The editor and proprietor from 1877 until his death in 1922 was Richard Kyle Fox, an immigrant from Ireland, who turned the publication into something close to a national institution. With its focus on lurid crime, sleaze, vice, and bimbos, it was a periodical commonly found in the nation's pool rooms, barber shops, and taverns. Its sexy illustrations and advertisements sometimes challenged the obscenity laws of the day. What really made the Police Gazette popular was its coverage of sports. No other newspaper in the United States covered sports to its extent--especially prize fighting. Published on pink paper, its coverage of major boxing events was so beloved by the public that often 300,000 issues were printed to satisfy demand following an important bout. The usual run was about 150,000 copies--easily enough to make it a gold mine for Fox. Fox started the tradition of awarding championship belts to boxers. Fox died in 1922 and the Great Depression hurt circulation considerably the following decade. Neverthelees the Police Gazette survived as a periodical in various forms until 1977.
