April 18 1906 The Day the Hills Trembled At 5:12 a.m. on April 18, 1906 The San Francisco Bay area erupted as the earth unleashed her fury. The violent shocks punctuated the strong shaking which lasting nearly 60 seconds. The quake was felt from southern Oregon to south of Los Angeles and inland as far as central Nevada. The ground had ripped open for more than 270 miles along a great fault - the San Andreas rift. The quake lasted only a minute but caused the one of the worst natural disaster in the nation's history. The damages were estimated at $400,000,000 in 1906 dollars, That would translate to nearly 10 billion dollars today. Photos The Library of Congress J. B. THE FORGOTTEN VICTIMS OF WWII The Greatest Mass Rape in History One of this century's greatest crimes, and probably one of the greatest crimes against women in history, was the mass rape of the conquered women of Europe in 1945. The rapists were mainly Red Army soldiers, some of them non-White troops from the Far East and Central Asian Republics of the Soviet Union. As the Red Army advanced toward her in 1945, the city of Berlin had become a city virtually without men. Out of a civilian population of 2,700,000, 2,000,000 were women. Former Soviet war correspondent Natalya Gesse recalled: "The Russian soldiers were raping every German female from eight to 80... It was an army of rapists." The rape victims were not just Germans. Polish women also suffered. So did young Russian, Belorussian and Ukrainian women who had been sent back to Germany by the Wehrmacht for slave labor. As Author Antony Beevor put it, "If anything, the events of 1945 reveal how thin the veneer of civilization can be when there is little fear of retribution." Far Away From Home Since 1942, Armed Forces Radio and later, Television Service (AFRTS) has been providing information, education, and most importantly, entertainment to U.S. military forces everywhere. From broadcasts to the troops serving around the world in WWII, from Soul during the Korean War, Saigon throughout the Vietnam War, to stations in Europe and Iraq today. Since 1942, through today, wherever American men and women serve, a bit of the "hometown" travels with them. Thanks to Armed Forces Radio and later the Armed Forces Network the entertainment that they held so dear is never really far away. In a way that is perhaps never realized at the moment, when we heard the music that we really never are Far Away From Home Film Clips and Video Footage: Official and Amateur footage Vincent Romano Archives http://www.webalice.it/romanoarchives/ The Armed Forces Network http://www.afneurope.net/ jnaz33 http://www.youtube.com/jnaz33 ReptilianGems http://www.youtube.com/ReptilianGems galtcitycouncil http://www.youtube.com/galtcitycouncil Jamie "RustyJms" http://www.youtube.com/RustyJms John "WolfieRed1" http://www.youtube.com/WolfieRed1 Ecapsym http://www.myspace.com/yagsi_ecapsym Jay "MyEarbot" http://www.youtube.com/user/MyEarbot marcofrix http://www.youtube.com/marcofrix rusherecumbent http://www.youtube.com/rusherecumbent Audio Clips OTRCAT (pronounced 'oh-tee-R cat' - from Old Time Radio Catalog) http://www.otrcat.com music nowhere to run - Martha and the Vandellas going up the country - Canned Heat somebody to love - Jefferson Airplane sunshine of your love - Cream papa's Got a Brand New Bag - James Brown i can't get no satisfaction - The Rolling Stones reflections - Diana Ross & the Supremes war - Edwin Starr we've gotta get out of this place - the Animals changes - David Bowie fat bottom girls - Queen smoke on the water - Deep Purple featuring the voices of Don Wilson Harry von Zell avacadoazzurro and of course ... Chepstow Caer Cymru If there is a castle that comes close to matching Harlech Castle in historical importance, that castle is surely Chepstow. Chepstow is a Norman castle perched high above the banks of the river Wye in southeast Wales. Construction began at Chepstow in 1067, less than a year after William the Conqueror was crowned King of England. It was his master castle builder in the person of his loyal Norman lord William FitzOsbern. FitzOsbern's fortresses were the vehicles from which the new king consolidated control of his newly conquered lands. Chepstow Castle became the key launching point for expeditions into Wales, expeditions that eventually subdued the rebellious population. Power Outage Fun! Tonight we had a treat. Right when dinner was placed on the table the power went out. We broke out the candles and and had a romantic dinner with the kids but it was so much fun. Then we played a few quick board games and since the teacher said my daughter should learn her math skills faster we played Blackjack. What a great memory was made tonight. What memories do you have of power outages?

Farrah Fawcett -In April 1976, a poster company Pro Arts Inc., that had started out making anti-war posters, started to hear about a young up-and-coming beauty named Farrah Fawcett doing Wella Balsam shampoo commercials. Fawcett arranged to have Bruce McBroom, a freelance photographer with whom she had worked with before, do the shoot. McBroom took the pictures at Farrah's poolside Bel Air, California home!! --On September 22, 1976, the first episode of Fawcett playing the character Jill Munroe in the TV series Charlie's Angels was aired. Around the same time, her swimsuit poster was released. It went on to sell a still-unrivaled 12 million copies and she became known for her tousled hair and bright smile. The hairstyle went on to become an international trend, with women sporting a "Farah-Do" or "Farrah Hair" and the hairstyle was even spoofed in various media... (born February 2, 1947) is an American actress. She was a noted pop culture figure whose hairstyle was emulated by millions of young women, and a sex symbol for millions of young men in the 1970s and 1980s. She went on to become a critically accepted actress, appearing in television movies (The Burning Bed, Poor Little Rich Girl: The Barbara Hutton Story and sometimes unsympathetic Small Sacrifices)...Fawcett was married to Lee Majors, star of The Six Million Dollar Man, from 1973–1982, though the two separated in 1979. During this time, she was known as Farrah Fawcett-Majors....From 1982 to the present, Fawcett has been involved romantically with actor Ryan O'Neal. The relationship produced a son, Redmond O'Neal, who was born in 1985.

The Official Pledge of Allegiance Salute The pledge of allegiance was originally written in 1892 by Francis Bellamy, a socialist magazine writer. When he wrote it for an children’s magazine, he also described a salute that he thought would be appropriate during its recital. The pledge was aimed towards children, and the magazine also gave free flags away to schools, where the pledge was originally recited. The salute they were taught to give, with one stiff arm outstretched toward the flag, was deemed the “Bellamy salute” after its creator (who had gotten the idea from a salute that the Romans had done). In the early 1940s, it was noticed that the salute bore a resemblance to a certain other salute being used in Germany at the time (which was based off of the same original Roman salute). As a result, it was formally replaced by Congress with the now-customary hand-on-heart during the pledge.
