Hymn To The Fallen With Remembrance Sunday coming around and the Poppy appeal in full swing I thought I'd add my thanks to all those who served and still serve in the armed forces. Freedom is a word thrown about too easily but for these brave people who knows what our world would be like? 'Lest we forget'.

WHEN TELEVISON WAS YOUNG 1977 part 5 From April of 1977, here is part 5 of a CBS special called "When Television Was Young," with the late Charles Kuralt. An excellent special about TV in the 1950s, there is plenty of archival footage here. Remember, this was shown in the late 70s, before we had 100+ cable channels, DVDs, video stores, or the Internet! If you're under 55, this is a great history lesson for you. If you're over 55, you may well remember many of the shows and people highlighted in this special!!

Featured Member- SpruceMoose My name is Wayne. I was born in 1952 in a town about 40 miles east of Los Angeles, California. For the last 57 years, I have lived within shouting distance of Route 66. I have always been a big fan of trivia, especially history. A brief dabbling in genealogy revealed that I'm a direct descendant of Edward III, but my friend Dolores Cullen, a scholar of Geoffry Chaucer, was more impressed that the bard's first patron, John of Gaunt is something like my 19th great-grandfather. I was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose for quite some time, where my wife, Linda and I both served as officers. When she passed away I consoled myself with the internet, where I discovered YRT, and I'm also an habitue of Yahoo Answers, where I endure bad spelling and nonexistent punctuation in order to offer guidance to young people. My profile picture [avatar] is of me, taken in about 1963, judging from the roller skates and my godparents' 1962 Chevy that was originally in the background. Just to make myself a little more interesting, I am currently homeless, living in one motel room or another, or occasionally staying with a friend. I'm so old, I can remember when Knott's Berry Farm, Southern California's oldest theme park, had free admission, and you bought individual tickets for each attraction.

Jib Jab RIP Dear JibJabber, Three years ago, my brother and I conceived JokeBox as a place on the web for people to share laughs. Since then, an amazing community has flourished around that idea and built the biggest joke database in the world. Today, JokeBox has over 140,000 video, text, photo and audio jokes that have been seen hundreds of millions of times. Given that success, it is with deep regret that we are announcing that we are taking JokeBox offline as of December 11, 2008......... We deeply apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. It is our sincere hope that we can bring the non-video and audio elements of JokeBox back online in 2009. To that end, we will keep you posted on our progress. Thanks for your support, understanding and, most of all, for sharing so many laughs on JokeBox over the years; No one is going to miss it more than we are. Sincerely, Evan and Gregg Spiridellis

German Children of Charles Lindbergh In 1927, Charles Lindbergh, a virtualy unknown air mail pilot from Minnesota, became a worldwide celebrity with his daring solo flight over the Atlantic Ocean. He remained a beloved American hero until the onset of the Second World War when his isolationist views thinly disguised an admiration for Nazi Germany. Twenty-nine years after Lindbergh died in 1974, Lindbergh's reputation took another beating. It was revealed he had fathered at least seven children with three German mistressess during his many trips abroad in the 1950s and 1960s. In 2003 three of them, the children of Brigitte Hesshaimer, produced 112 letters Lindbergh had written to their mother along with childhood photographs with the famed aviator and their own recollections of the tall, lanky man who they knew as Careau Kent. DNA tests conclusively proved they were Lindbergh's children. The Hesshaimer children, born between 1958 and 1967, said they didn't realize Lindbergh was their father until the early 1980s when Bouteuil, the middle child, began asking questions. After discovering a bundle of letters allegedly written by Lindbergh and addressed to her mother, Bouteuil confronted her and was finally told that Kent was actually Lindbergh. The children promised to keep the secret until both their mother and Lindbergh's widow, Anne Morrow Lindbergh, were deceased. Both died in 2001. The revelation stunned Lindbergh's Pulitzer-prize winning biographer, A. Scott Berg, who told the Associated Press when the siblings made their claim, it would have been "out of character for Lindbergh to father the siblings." The Hesshaimers say Lindbergh met their mother, a Munich hatmaker, and fell in love in the mid-1950s when he spent much of his time traveling. Lindbergh would visit the family once or twice a year when the children were young, staying for five days to two weeks, Dyrk Hesshaimer said, and their mother forbade them from discussing their father outside of the family. “We quickly built up a close relationship to him,” he said. “We didn't have the time together with him that other children had with their fathers, but when he was there he concentrated very intensively on us.” Bouteil recalled breakfasts where her mother and Lindbergh would talk for hours, and of the people he'd met. “I knew he was something special,” Dyrk Hesshaimer said. “He had knowledge about U.S. politics that wasn't in the news at the time.” Their mother received what would be her final letter dated Aug. 16, 1974. It read, “I am losing energy everyday. My love to you and the children, all I can send.” Brigitte Hesshaimer later read in the papers that Lindbergh had died of cancer on Aug. 26, 1974 She told her children simply that their father was dead. Subsequent research by German investigators found that Lindbergh had fathered four other children with two other German women.
