I generally avoid hyperbole, but Ken Burns' 1989 PBS documentary The Civil War was the best program I've ever seen on television. Here is the first nine minutes. It just oozes quality.

One of the most beautiful songs from the 1960's, from Broadway's 'The Fantasticks', which opened on May 3, 1960, and closed Jan 13, 2002, after 17,162 performances. This song, performed by the Brothers Four, was part of a PBS special on folk music. It reminds me of an era when The Brothers Four, The Lettermen and other groups would perform at coffee houses, winter canivals and university campuses.....Try To Remember!

Remember the Del Vikings? They were noted for being one of the few racially integrated musical groups to attain success in the 1950's. The group was formed in 1955 by Clarence E. Quick, Kripp Johnson, Don Jackson, Samuel Paterson, and Bernard Robertson, who were all enlisted in the USAF and stationed in Pittsburgh PA. Because all of the members were in the service, they constantly ran the risk of being disrupted by members being stationed in other places. This happened soon after the group's forming when Paterson and Robertson were sent to Germany. They were replaced by baritone David Lerchey, the group's first white member, and tenor Norman Wright. Originally signed to Fee Bee Records (1957), their first hit came in 1957, with the Wright-led 'Come Go with Me'. Soon after, Jackson was out, and was replaced by Gus Backus, the group's second white member. The group quickly found itself in greater demand following the release of 'Come Go with Me', which propelled the group into the Top 10 on Billboard's Top 100.
They split up in 1965, but were back in 1970 with a near original lineup, Clarence Quick, Kripp Johnson, Norman Wright, Dave Lerchey, and William Blakely. Although a couple of members died over the years, the Del Vikings were featured on the PBS special KPBS Doo Wop Show in 1999, which is when this performance was filmed.

Big Blue Marble was a half-hour children's television series that ran from 1974-1983 in syndication. Distinctive content included stories about children around the world and a pen-pal club that encouraged inter-cultural communication. The show was a very early example of gentle multiculturalism. Fannee Doolee is a fictitious girl acted in the playhouse by the ZOOMers on ZOOM. During the play, Fannee Doolee does not face the audience and she does not speak; instead, Fannee Doolee's unheard dialog is exposed when the person she was seen talking to turns to talk with others. The play is a comedy and the repeating gag is that Fannee Doolee likes and dislikes things that are similar and the people around her are perplexed by this inconsistency.(from wikipedia.org)

ZOOM encourages children to "turn off the TV and do it!" On the show, a cast of (usually) seven kids (known as ZOOMers) perform various activities such as games, plays, poems, recipes, jokes, and science experiments, all suggested by viewer contributions. The mail-in request became a pop culture reference for its music exhortation to "Write ZOOM, Z-Double-O-M, Box 3-5-0, Boston, Mass 0-2-1-3-4: send it to ZOOM!". (from wikipedia.org)
