Dewey Martin, the muscular, gregarious drummer and singer who helped found the pioneering country rock band Buffalo Springfield with Neil Young and Stephen Stills, has died. He was 68.
Martin was found dead Sunday by a roommate in his Van Nuys apartment, longtime friend Lisa Lenes said. She said Martin had health problems in recent years and she believed he died of natural causes.

NEW YORK - Singer Teresa Brewer, who topped the charts in the 1950s with hits like "Till I Waltz Again with You," and performed with jazz legends Count Basie and Duke Ellington, died Wednesday. She was 76. This is a clip from her 1981 concert.
Brewer died at her New Rochelle home of a neuromuscular disease, said family spokesman Bill Munroe. Her four daughters were at her bedside.
Brewer had scores of hits in the 1950s and a burgeoning film career, but she pared down her public life to raise her children. She re-emerged a decade later to perform with jazz greats Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie and Wynton Marsalis.

At the 1976 Montreal Olympics, American Shirley Babashoff was supposed to be the female version of Mark Spitz. Babashoff was a threat to win six gold medals. Instead, she won just one gold medal and four silvers. In every race she lost, she lost to an East German. The star of the East German women's swimming team was Kornelia Ender (pictured here). Babashoff was immediately suspicious of the East Germans because of their muscular builds and deep voices. She claimed the dressing room 'sounded like a coed room.' At the time, Babashoff was criticized as a sore loser. The press dubbed her 'Surly Shirley.' After East Germany collapsed in 1989 the truth came out: East German athletes were regularly given steroids via injections to increase their athletic capabilities. Babashoff now campaigns to have the East German medal results nullified.

Jack LaLanne, the fitness guru and tireless television exercise-show host who demonstrated jumping jacks and push-ups while touting low-sugar diets and weight training long before they were fashionable, has died. He was 96.
LaLanne died of pneumonia today at his home in Morro Bay, California, the Associated Press reported, citing his agent, Rick Hersh.
LaLanne, who sometimes referred to himself as the Godfather of Fitness, was a TV pioneer in 1951 when he hosted one of the first exercise programs. His following grew when “The Jack LaLanne Show” was syndicated nationally from 1956 to 1970. The muscular host demonstrated calisthenics while amusing the home audience with his patter: “Ten seconds on the lips and a lifetime on the hips” and “Your waistline is your lifeline.”

Tennis player Helen Wills (later Helen Wills Moody), a California girl, captured the U.S. National Championship at Forest Hills at age 17 in 1923--the second-youngest female to manage the feat at that time. In an era when male sportswriters believed that being a female sports champion and being a beauty were incompatible, Wills proved them wrong. Wills' natural good looks turned heads wherever she played and won. She won often. The fact that Wills captured 19 Grand Slam singles tiles between 1923 and 1938 also enhanced her popularity. One writer said of Wills that "every male between the age of six and 60 was a little bit in love with her." In a six-year period from 1927 to 1933, Wills won every singles match she played without dropping a set! Standing about 5'7" with a muscular frame, Wills rarely showed emotion on the court and was dubbed Miss Poker Face. The nickname was coined by a New York sports journalist named Ed Sullivan. (Yes--that Ed Sullivan!) Charlie Chaplin, an avid tennis fan and a fan of attractive women, said the most beautiful thing on Earth was watching Helen Wills play tennis. Wills struck the ball with great power from an irregular stance: Her body faced forward rather than to the side when she made contact with the ball. Late in her life, Wills was asked if the modern, larger-faced racquets would have improved her game, she said, "No, I always struck the ball in the middle of my racquet, so I don't think a larger size racquet would have made any difference." Wills lived to be 92 years old, passing away on New Year's Day 1998.

Former world heavyweight champion Ezzard Charles, who was afflicted with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease), is featured in this stark public service announcement from 1973. Charles succumbed to the terrible disease in 1975.
