The first issue, published in December 1953, did not carry a date, as Hefner was unsure whether there would be a second issue. It was produced in Hefner's Hyde Park kitchen. The first centerfold was Marilyn Monroe, although the picture used had originally been taken for a calendar, rather than for Playboy. The first issue was an immediate sensation; it sold out within a matter of weeks. The cover price was 50¢. Copies of the first issue in Mint to Near Mint condition sold for over $5,000 in 2002.

NEW YORK - Singer Teresa Brewer, who topped the charts in the 1950s with hits like "Till I Waltz Again with You," and performed with jazz legends Count Basie and Duke Ellington, died Wednesday. She was 76. This is a clip from her 1981 concert.
Brewer died at her New Rochelle home of a neuromuscular disease, said family spokesman Bill Munroe. Her four daughters were at her bedside.
Brewer had scores of hits in the 1950s and a burgeoning film career, but she pared down her public life to raise her children. She re-emerged a decade later to perform with jazz greats Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie and Wynton Marsalis.

-In April 1976, a poster company Pro Arts Inc., that had started out making anti-war posters, started to hear about a young up-and-coming beauty named Farrah Fawcett doing Wella Balsam shampoo commercials. Fawcett arranged to have Bruce McBroom, a freelance photographer with whom she had worked with before, do the shoot. McBroom took the pictures at Farrah's poolside Bel Air, California home!!
--On September 22, 1976, the first episode of Fawcett playing the character Jill Munroe in the TV series Charlie's Angels was aired. Around the same time, her swimsuit poster was released. It went on to sell a still-unrivaled 12 million copies and she became known for her tousled hair and bright smile. The hairstyle went on to become an international trend, with women sporting a "Farah-Do" or "Farrah Hair" and the hairstyle was even spoofed in various media...
(born February 2, 1947) is an American actress. She was a noted pop culture figure whose hairstyle was emulated by millions of young women, and a sex symbol for millions of young men in the 1970s and 1980s. She went on to become a critically accepted actress, appearing in television movies (The Burning Bed, Poor Little Rich Girl: The Barbara Hutton Story and sometimes unsympathetic Small Sacrifices)...Fawcett was married to Lee Majors, star of The Six Million Dollar Man, from 1973–1982, though the two separated in 1979. During this time, she was known as Farrah Fawcett-Majors....From 1982 to the present, Fawcett has been involved romantically with actor Ryan O'Neal. The relationship produced a son, Redmond O'Neal, who was born in 1985.
