Bath School Disaster 1927 It might surprise you to learn that the worst act of school violence in American history happened way back on Wednesday, May 18, 1927 at the Bath Consolidated School in Bath Township, Michigan. The perpetrator was a school board official named Andrew Kehoe who was angered by a new tax levy. Kehoe planned his revenge for months, secretly hiding hundreds of pounds of explosives beneath the school. On the morning of May 18, 1927, Kehoe killed his wife and fire-bombed his farmhouse. As fire officials raced to the Kehoe farm, Kehoe drove to the school and ignited the hidden explosives. As rescuers and concerned parents arrived at the school, Kehoe then blew up his car, killing himself plus several others who had survived the initial explosion. Kehoe's grim total for the day: 45 people killed and 68 others wounded. Most of the fatalities were students between the ages of eight and 12.

Listowel Arena Disaster 50th Anniversary Fifty years ago today, on Saturday morning, February 28, 1959, in a small Canadian town not far from where I live, a terrible tragedy occurred: The roof of the Listowel (Ontario) Arena collapsed due to a heavy accumulation of snow and inadequate construction. Seven peewee hockey players (aged 10, 11 and 12) and Listowel's recreation director were crushed to death by the debris while they were on the ice surface. A group of other young players preparing for their upcoming game in the arena's dressing rooms were completely unscathed. The arena was only four years old.

Double Life of Arthur Irwin Toronto's Arthur Irwin was the man who invented the baseball gove. In 1884, while playing with the National League's Providence Grays, Irwin broke two fingers on his catching hand. In order to keep playing, he wore a carriage driver's glove filled with cotton. At first Irwin was derided as a sissy, but within a decade almost all major leaguers were wearing gloves in the field. However, Irwin is most famous for the double life he led as a bigamist--one that only became known after he died. On July 16, 1921, Irwin was aboard a New York to Bston ship, the Calvin Murphy. He told a fellow passenger he was going home to Boston to die. The next morning, Irwin was nowhere to be found. It was surmised that he either jumped or fell overboard. Irwin left behind a grieving wife and family in Boston--and a grieving wife and family in New York City! Neither family had any inkling of the other's existence. Irwin's body was never found, leading to speculation that he had faked his death. For years there were rumors he was living in rural Georgia under an assumed name. Irwin's sister answered the accusations by saying, 'With Arthur, you never know.'

Donny and Marie - Morning Side of the Mountain Another memorable Donny and Marie Osmond song: Morning Side of the Mountain. This one did well on the charts in 1974, peaking at #8 on the Billboard Hot 100. (It ascended to the top spot on the easy listening chart for a week.) Tommy Edwards originally had a hit with it back in 1951.

It's shows the conclusion of Joey Heatherton's mystery guest appearance, a commercial for Kool cigarettes, and a regular challenger--a female football writer. Panelist Dorothy Kilgallen fittingly identified the final contestant's occupation. Kilgallen, age 52, was found dead in her home the next morning. The circumstances surrounding her untimely death have raised a few eyebrows over the years.

A Pittance of Time November 11 is Remembrance Day in Canada. It is the anniversary of the date in 1918 when the Armistice was signed that ended the First World War. It is a solemn occasion. It is customary for Canadians to pause for two minutes at 11 a.m. to remember those who died in the two world wars, in Korea, and in later conflicts. This video is based on a true incident observed by singer/songwriter Terry Kelly on November 11, 1999. He was in a Nova Scotia drug store that morning. At 11 a.m. everyone in the store paused for two minutes of silence--except for one oblivious man who had a young daughter with him. Kelly channelled his anger into this touching song, A Pittance of Time.
