JFK and Jackie on Home - 1957 Home was an NBC daytime program billed as the "weekday women's magazine of the air." It was hosted by Arlene Francis during its three-year run from 1954 to 1957. Created by Home magazine, it was basically a follow-up to NBC's Today show. In this clip from an April 1957 episode, Arlene interviews Senator John F. Kennedy and his wife Jackie, although the focus is more on how the latter copes with being the wife of a U.S. senator. This clip shows what is supposed to be a typical morning for Jackie: walking the family dog, shopping, going to the dry cleaners, etc. At the end of the clip JFK offers some advice that rings true 58 years later.

Big John Little John - Sitcom Flop Who recalls this sitcom dud? In the fall of 1976, NBC decided to move away from cartoons and create a sitcom for its Saturday morning audience. It was titled Big John, Little John. The show's premise was that 40-year-old middle school teacher John Martin, while vacationing in Florida, takes a small sip of water from a hidden pool--not realizing it is the fabled Fountain of Youth that Ponce de Leon once hoped to find. The effect was that 40-year-old John would unpredictably descend in age to a 12-year-old...and then return to being an adult again just as unpredictably. (According to the story, had John taken a large drink from the pool, he would have been 12 years old forever!) Herb Edelman played 40-year-old John. Robbie Rist (notorious for his role as Cousin Oliver on the Brady Bunch) played 12-year-old John. Joyce Bulifant played 'their' wife. Only 13 episodes were made. The last first-run episode aired just before Christmas 1976, but reruns were shown until September 1977. Here is the show's opening.

Forgotten Show : Run Joe Run The reference book Total Television describes Run, Joe Run as a cross between Lassie and The Fugitive--which is quite accurate. The premise of this NBC kids' show (which ran on Saturday mornings from 1974 to 1976) was that an army German Shepherd named Joe is wrongly accused of attacking his trainer in the K-9 Unit, Sgt. William Corey. Joe flees but is relentlessly pursued by reward-seeking folks who want him to face retribution for the crime he did not commit! While on the lam, Joe would help people in distress. It was one of a scant few live-action Saturday morning shows. During the first season, Arch Whiting played Sgt. Corey who also pursued Joe--to tell him he'd been exonerated. In the second season, the show's focus shifted. A new character was added: a young biker named Josh McCoy (played by Chad States) who became Joe's do-gooding ally. Here are the opening and closing montages from the first season.
