Ed McMahon, the loyal "Tonight Show" sidekick who bolstered boss Johnny Carson with guffaws and a resounding "H-e-e-e-e-e-ere's Johnny!" for 30 years, died early Tuesday. He was 86.
McMahon died shortly after midnight at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center surrounded by his wife, Pam, and other family members, said his publicist, Howard Bragman.
Bragman didn't give a cause of death, saying only that McMahon had a "multitude of health problems the last few months."

Madonna's first tv appearance on an American talk show was as Johnny's guest in 1987. As expected she's totally herself...

South of Sunset was a CBS detective show that lasted just one episode. Despite being heavily promoted by the network during its 1993 World Series coverage, South of Sunset was axed after its pilot aired on October 27, 1993. Some west coast affiliates never aired the show, preferring to stick with news coverage of the Malibu wildfires. South of Sunset drew an anemic 6.1 rating, believed to be the worst showing ever for a major network show's fall premiere. The detective show stared rocker Glen Frey as Los Angeles private eye Cody McMahon who partnered with and ex-thief named Ziggy Duane. Here's the opening of the only episode that ever aired on CBS.

It seems every actor (and non-actor) in the 1950's and 60's needed to record an album. Unlike Telly Savalas, who has at least four under his belt, I believe this performer only cut this one album. (The Seekers have nothing on this guy-!)

On March 23, 1973 the memory-based game show Concentration ended its hugely successful run of nearly 15 years as an NBC daytime program. In this clip host Bob Clayton bids a kind farewell to the show's loyal fans. Clayton hosted the show from 1969 to 1973. It had previously been hosted by Hugh Downs from 1958 through 1965. Clayton was the show's announcer when Downs was the host. Jack Barry, Art James, and Bill Mazer all hosted the show in the years between Downs' and Clayton's tenures. A few months into 1969, Ed McMahon replaced Clayton--which proved to be an extremely unpopular decision. When ratings started to tank, Clayton was brought back as host. Clayton died of cardiac arrest in 1979; he was only 57. Interesting bit of trivia: Concentration was the last game show to employ an organist to provide live music.
