After eight successful seasons, The Andy Griffith Show went off the air in 1968 as television's number-one show. In September 1970, CBS created a new series for Griffith, a comedy-drama titled 'Headmaster,' in which Griffith played the headmaster of a co-ed California prep school. Viewers, accustomed to Griffith playing a southern sheriff, rejected the show. It was scrapped after just three months. Undeterred, CBS then cast Griffith in a more folksy-type role as a small-town North Carolina mayor in The New Andy Griffith Show. Even though it was written and created by Aaron Ruben (who had created the original Andy Griffith Show) it too never caught on with viewers. It was yanked after just 12 episodes in CBS' infamous 'rural purge' when all its non-urban sitcoms were axed. Here is the opening of Griffith's second failure of the 1970-71 season.

A painting of a nude maiden standing shin deep in a lake created a major scandal in America in 1913. Matinee de Septembre (September Morn) was painted by French artist Paul Emile Chabas over three summers, ending in 1912. The next year, when it was in the window of a Chicago art gallery, a complaint was issued to the mayor's office and the owner of the gallery was subsequently charged with indecency. He beat the rap. Two months later a similar controversy erupted in New York City when the painting was displayed by another art dealer. Anthony Comstock, a self-appointed crusader against vice, vowed to file obscenity charges against the man but never followed through. The surrounding publicity naturally made September Morn the most sought after piece of art in America. Thousands of lithograph reproductions were made in the next decade. The painting is often denounced as kitsch by art critics who claim it lacks contrast, co-ordinated lines, and a worthy subject. Today the original painting is on display in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

In February 1933, less than three weeks before being sworn in as the chief executive of the United States, president-elect Franklin Roosevelt survived an assassination attempt in Miami. Unfortunately, Chicago's mayor Anton Cernak, was struck by a shot intended for Roosevelt. He died of his wounds. The assassin said he didn't personally dislike Roosevelt. He just hated all rich people.

William F. Buckley Jr., the erudite Ivy Leaguer and conservative herald who showered huge and scornful words on liberalism as he observed, abetted and cheered on the right's post-World War II rise from the fringes to the White House, died Wednesday. He was 82.
Editor, columnist, novelist, debater, TV talk show star of "Firing Line," harpsichordist, trans-oceanic sailor and even a good-natured loser in a New York mayor's race, Buckley worked at a daunting pace, taking as little as 20 minutes to write a column for his magazine, the National Review.

In 1998 former wrestling villain Jesse (The Body) Ventura ran for governor of Minnesota. He wasn't exactly a political newcomer. Ventura had been elected mayor of Brooklyn Park, MN in 1991 and served until 1995. However, nobody gave Ventura much of a chance to win the gubernatorial election--but he did, despite only spending about $300,000 on his election campaign. Here's one of Ventura's low-budget camapign commercials that made him the 'governing body' of Minnesota.

Remeber Danny Almonte? He was the 5-foot-8 star pitcher at the 2001 Little League World Series. Almonte struck out 62 of the 72 batters he faced. He threw a perfect game too. Danny was honored by New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani. Trouble was Danny was two years too old to be playing in the LLWS. Danny's father, Felipe, had falsified Danny's Dominican Republic birth certificate so it read 1989 instead of 1987. Because Danny towered over most of the other players in the tournament, accusations that he was too old were widespread. The truth was finally uncovered by two journalists from Sports Illustrated. Danny's Bronx, New York team had to forfeit their third-place standing. Felipe Almonte faced charges of filing a false document when he was deported back to the Dominican Republic. To make matters worse, there was no record of Danny attending school in the year his team went to the LLWS. He could not speak any English.

Certain Hispanic organizations do not consider those of Portuguese descent to be Hispanic. Both the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials and the Hispanic National Bar Association believe that Sonia Sotomayor, if confirmed, will be the first Hispanic justice.

Shortly after Hurricane Katrina flattened New Orleans in 2005, mayor Ray Nagin, as this news clip shows, implored black people to rebuild it into "a chocolate city." In 2014, Nagin, who left office in 2010, was convicted on 20 of 21 counts of bribery and corruption charges pertaining to the city's rebuilding efforts.
