Lois Maxwell, who became so well-known for her performances as Ms Moneypenny in the James Bond films, has died. The Canadian-born actress starred alongside Sean Connery in the first James Bond movie, "Dr. No," in 1962 as the secretary to M, the head of the secret service.- but there's much more to her acting career than that. She started out against her parents will - and without their knowledge in a Canadian childrens radio program - credited as 'Robin Wells'. Before the age of 15 she left for England with The Canadian Army's Entertainment Corps and managed (after her age had been discovered) to get herself enrolled in The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, where she met and became friends with Roger Moore. Her movie career started with a Warner production A Matter of Life and Death (1946). After having won The Most Promising Newcomer Golden Globe Award in 1947 she went on to participate in 6 Hollywood productions before she decided to try her luck in Italy. She had to leave for England because of her husband's illness, and since then she has had roles in a number of movies besides the first 14 Bond movies. In 1989 she retired.
She died Saturday night at Fremantle Hospital near her home in Perth, Australia. Bond star, Roger Moore said she was suffering from cancer. She was 80.

This is Margaret Hamilton, the actress who played the Wicked Witch of the West in the Wizard of Oz. Many probably already knew this but I only discovered it today! I never knew in the 70s as a child watching the commercial that it was the same person. You learn something new every day!

Dabney Coleman played egotistical sportswriter Slap Maxwell in The Slap Maxwell Story--a short-lived "dramady" that ran for 22 episodes on ABC during the 1987-88 season. Maxwell was a thoroughly dislikable character. The old-school Maxwell wrote his column, Slap's Shots, on a manual typewriter. It was filled with libelous rumors and innuendos which caused his second-rate newspaper, The Ledger, to be the frequent recipient of lawsuits. Maxwell's personal life was also a mess. It included rocky relationships with his girlfriend, ex-wife, and estranged son. None of the 22 episodes had titles. Curiously, in 1983-84 Coleman had played a similarly dislikable TV talk show host in the equally short-lived NBC sitcom Buffalo Bill. It, though, was a favorite among critics and was nominated for several awards before being axed due to poor ratings.

Barbara Feldon and Don Adams of Get Smart grace this TV Guide cover from 1967. Get Smart was an extremely popular spy spoof that ran on NBC from 1965 to 1970 that pitted the counter-espionage activities of CONTROL versus the nefarious deeds of KAOS. The show introduced the phrase "would you believe..." into popular culture. The youthful looking Adams was ten years Feldon's senior. Adams won three consecutive Emmys playing Maxwell Smart (CONTROL agent 86). Feldon was nominated for two Emmys for her role as CONTROL agent 99. Adams was a WWII veteran who was the only survivor from a platoon that saw action on Guadalcanal. Feldon first gained fame by winning the jackpot on The $64,000 Question. Her subject was Shakespeare.

In 1971 NBC had high hopes for a new sitcom titled The Partners. It starred Don Adams as Detective Sergeant Lenny Crooke and Rupert Crosse as his partner Detective Sergeant George Robinson. Both cops were prone to acts of comic carelessness but Crooke was the more bumbling of the two. Rare for its time, The Partners had no opening montage or theme song. Its title and credits were simply interspersed among the opening scene. (Music did accompany the closing credits, however, and the same tune was occasionally heard leading into some scenes.) Adams had hoped the series would address serious social issues, but NBC preferred to recast Adams in a purely comedic role similar to his Maxwell Smart character from Get Smart which had ended in 1970. The Partners scored very well with test audiences, so NBC slotted it at 8 p.m. on Saturday night beginning on September 18, 1971. In a stroke of bad luck, in the fall of 1971 CBS decided to move its surprise hit All in the Family to the same time slot to replace the fading My Three Sons. The Partners was crushed in the ratings. It was pulled from NBC's lineup in January 1972 although a few unaired episodes were shown in the summer.
