Paul Williams wrote the soundtrack for a generation. His songs were everywhere in the 1970s -- you could hear them on the radio, television, movies, and The Muppets. The simple honesty of his lyrics still captures attention and spurs the imagination. This song, The Rainbow Connection seems to fit him so well. Often cited as one of the great comedies of its time, the film version won critical acclaim and became the biggest US box office hit in the summer of 1955. It contains one of the most iconic images of the 20th Century in which Marilyn Monroe's dress is blown up above her waist by a passing train underneath a subway grate she is standing on. A famous quote, "Isn't it delicious?" has originated from this scene and was even posed as a question on the game show WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE? and a bit more TRIVIA ~ both Jimmy Stewart and Walter Matthau were considered for the part of the middle-aged husband, tempted by his sexy, blonde neighbor . . . . . .

This is from NBC's Sunday morning series of the early '50s, "THE MAGIC CLOWN". Doesn't the host look like a young Dennis James? It gives you lots of pep, sure it does...it's all sugar! And that clown....kinda scary if you ask me..

Barbara Jill Walters was born September 25, 1929. She is an American journalist, writer and media personality who has been a regular fixture on morning television shows (Today and The View), an evening news magazine (20/20), and on The ABC Evening News as the first female evening news anchor. Walters was first known as a popular TV morning news anchor for over 10 years on NBC's Today, where she worked with Hugh Downs and later hosts Frank McGee and Jim Hartz. Walters later spent over 20 years as co-host of ABC's newsmagazine 20/20. She was the first woman to co-anchor the network evening news, working with Harry Reasoner on The ABC Evening News.
With all due respect to Ms Walters, I just couldn't help myself with this one.

She has always been one of my favorite actresses and I think she's one of the most underrated and overlooked actresses of her generation. Kim Novak was a unique phenomenon. As the last of the "manufactured" screen goddesses and Columbia's answer to Marilyn Monroe, Kim had a more refined sex appeal than the other blond goddesses of the 1950's. She radiated a kind of mystery that harked back to the days of Garbo and Dietrich. Onscreen Kim Novak seems distant, enigmatic, thoughtful and somehow sad. She has been referred to as the reluctant goddess, the melancholy blonde and the lavender blonde. The studio created the idea that lavender was Kim Novak's favorite color as part of her movie star image. However, I think the term Lavender Blonde fits Kim Novak - it sets her apart from the sunny Doris Day or the gilded Marilyn Monroe. Lavender is closer to blue - makes you think of Madeleine in Vertigo, lost in thought by the seashore.

my grandmother loved all the old detective magazines . . i didn't realize at the time how risque they were! Here's a little history: "By far the most famous publication in the United States by this name was officially The National Police Gazette, although commonly referred to as simply the Police Gazette. It was founded in 1845 by George Wilkes, a journalist and sometime transcontinental railroad booster. The editor for most of the 19th century was Richard K. Fox, an immigrant from Ireland. Ostensibly devoted to matters of interest to the police, it was more often a tabloid-like publication, with lurid coverage of murders, Wild West outlaws, and sport."

Sadly when I think of Yul Brynner I don't immediately think of The King and I or The Magnificent Seven. I think of this public service ad from the mid-1980s that aired after he died from cancer. Pretty chilling, wasn't it?

James Cagney broke away from his traditional tough guy and gangster roles to portray George M. Cohan in Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942). Try to imagine Steven Segal or Sylvester Stallone doing anything like this! Here is the title number. Enjoy!
