Upstairs Downstairs Upstairs, Downstairs was a BAFTA and Emmy award-winning British drama set in a large townhouse in Edwardian London that depicted the lives of the servants "downstairs" and their masters "upstairs". It ran on ITV for five series from 1971 to 1975. First shown in the US in 1974. Upstairs, Downstairs attempted to portray life in a high-status house set against the events of early 20th century. Great events are featured prominently in the episodes but minor or gradual changes are noted as well. It stands as a document of the social and technological changes that occurred between 1903 and 1930. The lives of the servants are integral to the story.

Lets Make A Deal Clips Here are a couple of clips from the zany game show Let's Make A Deal. Much like Deal Or No Deal, LMAD relied on the contestants' abilities to deal with psychological pressure and greed. The affable Monty Hall kept the show moving. More than 3,800 LMAD episodes ran on NBC and ABC from 1963 through 1976. It also had several incarnations as a syndicated show.

Oct 22nd Happy 65th Birthday Annette Annette Funicello reminisces about her singing career and how the "Annette" sound was created. She announced in 1992 that she suffers from multiple sclerosis. She had kept her condition a secret for many years, but felt it necessary to go public to combat false rumors that her impaired carriage was the result of alcoholism. That same year, she was inducted as a Disney Legend. In 1993, she opened the Annette Funicello Fund for Neurological Disorders at the California Community Foundation. She is truly a beautiful and courageous lady, who will always be loved and admired by all of us.

Skinhead Breaks Geraldo Riveras Nose Before brawls were regular happenings on TV talk show sets, a famous scuffle broke out on Geraldo in 1988. (What do you expect when you have a show about skinheads and their ideological enemies?) The result: one broken nose for host Geraldo Rivera! If it hadn't already begun, the era of sleazy talk shows was now underway. (Loathsome as this incident was, I must admit I experienced a bit of schadenfreude when this donnybrook happened!)

The Hollywood Ten 60 Years Ago Today The Hollywood blacklist, was the mid-20th Century list of screenwriters, actors, directors, musicians, and other U.S. entertainment professionals who were denied employment in the field because of their political beliefs or associations, real or suspected. Artists were barred from work on the basis of their alleged membership in or sympathy toward the American Communist Party, involvement in liberal or simply humanitarian political causes that enforcers of the blacklist associated with communism, and/or refusal to assist federal investigations into Communist Party activities. Some were blacklisted merely because their names came up at the wrong place and time. Even during the period of its strictest enforcement, the late 1940s through the late 1950s, the blacklist was rarely made explicit and verifiable, but it caused direct damage to the careers of scores of American artists, often made betrayal of friendship, not to mention principle, the price for a livelihood, and promoted ideological censorship across the entire industry. Pictured are Front row (from left): Herbert Biberman, attorneys Martin Popper and Robert W. Kenny, Albert Maltz, Lester Cole. Middle row: writer Dalton Trumbo, John Howard Lawson, Alvah Bessie, Samuel Ornitz. Back row: Ring Lardner Jr., Edward Dmytryk, Adrian Scott.

Miller Beer Commercial This commercial probably dates from the early 1960s. Note that the Miller label hasn't changed since then. Also note that the actors don't drink the beer. (I've never understood the logic behind that broadcast regulation.)

Roy Orbison In Dreams 1963 "In Dreams" is a song composed and sung by American rock and roll performer, Roy Orbison. An operatic ballad of lost love, it was released as a 45rpm single on Monument Records in February 1963. The song's opening line refers to "A candy-colored clown they call the Sandman". The Sandman is a character in Hans Christian Andersen's children stories who brings sleep and dreams by sprinkling magic sand onto the sleeping. It became the title track on the album In Dreams, released July 1963, and also appears on his 1989 posthumous album A Black & White Night Live from the 1988 HBO television special. "In Dreams" was used famously in an infamous whorehouse scene in David Lynch's Blue Velvet (1986). An effeminate drug dealer, played by Dean Stockwell, lip synchs the song at the insistence of a sadistic criminal played by Dennis Hopper. Later, Hopper's character utters the lines "In dreams I talk to you... in dreams you're MINE - all the time!" as he threatens Kyle Maclachlan's character. The song also appeared in and provided the title for Neil Jordan's 1999 psychological thriller In Dreams. If the structure of a standard pop song is ABABCAB (verse-chorus, verse-chorus, bridge, verse-chorus), then the structure of "In Dreams" is ABCDE: the lyrics "A candy-colored clown," "I close my eyes," "In dreams I walk with you," "But just before the dawn," and "It's too bad that all these things" all introduce sections of new musical material that are not repeated. In 1988, songwriters Will Jennings and Richard Kerr wrote a response to "In Dreams", called "In The Real World", which Orbison recorded for his 1989 album Mystery Girl. In 2004, Rolling Stone Magazine named "In Dreams" as one of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time."

Rock Hudson Smokes Camels Smoking gives people pleasure. Pleasure enhances your disposition. Therefore smoking is good for you. That was the logic Rock Hudson used to promote Camel cigarettes in this 1955 ad.
