Jack Johnson World Heavyweight Champion The first black boxer to hold the world heavyweight title was Jack Johnson of Galveston, Texas. Johnson held the crown from 1908 through 1915. A superb defensive fighter, he would sometimes go through several rounds without his opponent landing a meaningful punch. When he beat Canada's Tommy Burns for the title in Australia in 1908, correspondent Jack London wrote, 'Not one second of any round could legitimately be scored for Burns.' Johnson so outclassed his opposition that his title reign inspired the Great White Hope movement in America to find someone with the proper pigmentation to beat him. Nat Fleischer, who edited The Ring magazine from 1922 through 1972, rated Johnson as the greatest heavyweight ever.

Last Passenger Pigeon 1914 The decline and extinction of the passenger pigeon is one of the saddest chapters in natural history. When Europeans first arrived in North America passenger pigeons thrived in the billions. In 1800 they were so plentiful that a pair could be bought for just two cents. They lived in enormous flocks that sometimes overspread 300 square miles. However, by the mid-1800s, loss of habitat and the demand for a cheap source of meat doomed the passenger pigeon to extinction. The last accepted wild passenger pigeon was spotted in 1900. The last passenger pigeon in captivity, a female named Martha, died in the Cincinnati Zoo on September 1, 1914.

Gale Storm- Early TV star dies ale Storm, whose wholesome appearance and perky personality made her one of early television's biggest stars on "My Little Margie" and "The Gale Storm Show," has died. She was 87. Storm, who had been in failing health in recent years, died Saturday at a convalescent hospital in Danville, said her son, Peter Bonnell. Before landing the starring role in "My Little Margie" in 1952, Storm starred in numerous B movies opposite such stars as Roy Rogers, Eddie Albert and Jackie Cooper. After her last TV series, "The Gale Storm Show," ended in 1960, she went on to a successful singing career while continuing to make occasional TV appearances.

Distant Drums As a kid my Gran always seem to play Scottish country dance and classical music. Imagine my surpise when one day I heard this coming from her record player. Made me love the music of Jim Reeves to this day.

Cher Plastic Surgery Song Spitting Image Style This is just one of the sketches taken from a show called "Spitting Image" a satirical puppet show from the UK. This show was very popular in the 80's and 90's. Cruel it may be but it wasn't as bad as some tabloids would have you believe.
