Karen - Forgotten Sitcom Anyone remember a 1964 NBC sitcom titled Karen? Here's the opening montage--which looks remarkably similar to what Happy Days used to open its show a decade later. The theme song was sung by The Beach Boys! According to Total Television, Karen was one of three rotating 1964 NBC sitcoms set in 90 Bristol Court--an apartment complex. The other two (Against the World and Tom, Dick and Mary) were cancelled quickly. Karen lasted a full season until August 30, 1965. Pretty Debbie Watson played typical teenage girl Karen Scott. Richard Dreyfuss--who would go on to much bigger and better things in Hollywood--occasionally appeared as one of Karen's many friends. After Karen was cancelled, Debbie Watson was given the title role in another sitcom--Tammy. Like Karen, Tammy lasted just one season before getting the ax. Watson retired from acting in 1971 at age 22 after making an appearance on Love, American Style.

Beatrix Schuba - Figure Skater Austria's Beatrix (Trixi) Schuba was singlehandedly responsible for changing the scoring rules of figure skating--because she was so boring. Schuba won the women's world championship in both 1971 and 1972 and the gold medal at the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo, Japan. At the time 'compulsory figures' (also known as 'school figures') counted for a huge percentage of a skater's score and gave the sport its name. These consisted of skaters tracing patterns along the ice. Schuba was totally dominant at this aspect of her sport, but she was only a mediocre performer in the free skate. At the 1972 world championships in Calgary, Schuba had such a commanding lead after the compulsory figures that all she needed to do to win was show up for the free skate. That's basically what Schuba did. She came on the ice and skated only for a few seconds--but it was good enough for gold. The goings-on did not sit well with television audiences nor with the crowd in Calgary who felt Canada's Karen Magnussen, an excellent free skater, had been robbed of the gold medal. The next year FIS added a short program to the championships to reduce the importance of the compulsory figures. Schuba opted to retire. Compulsory figures were discontinued altogether in 1990.

Love American Style - The Elopement Love American Style was a light-hearted program that aired on ABC from 1969 to 1974. It was usually comprised of three unrelated segments that involved some sort of romantic entanglement. The show had no ongoing cast; familiar actors from other TV shows normally played the lead roles. The show's main segments were separated with 'blackouts'--short, comedic vignettes. Love American Style was considered somewhat risque for its time because of its bedroom humor. Here's a good example: Davy Jones and Karen Valentine star in this 10-minute clip from 1970 about an elopement that goes wrong when the groom-to-be enters the wrong girl's window. It is preceded by a 'blackout' that would have raised a few eyebrows in 1970. (Try to ignore the logo that appears in the middle of the screen.)
