WHEN TELEVISON WAS YOUNG 1977 part 5 From April of 1977, here is part 5 of a CBS special called "When Television Was Young," with the late Charles Kuralt. An excellent special about TV in the 1950s, there is plenty of archival footage here. Remember, this was shown in the late 70s, before we had 100+ cable channels, DVDs, video stores, or the Internet! If you're under 55, this is a great history lesson for you. If you're over 55, you may well remember many of the shows and people highlighted in this special!!

Featured Member- SpruceMoose My name is Wayne. I was born in 1952 in a town about 40 miles east of Los Angeles, California. For the last 57 years, I have lived within shouting distance of Route 66. I have always been a big fan of trivia, especially history. A brief dabbling in genealogy revealed that I'm a direct descendant of Edward III, but my friend Dolores Cullen, a scholar of Geoffry Chaucer, was more impressed that the bard's first patron, John of Gaunt is something like my 19th great-grandfather. I was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose for quite some time, where my wife, Linda and I both served as officers. When she passed away I consoled myself with the internet, where I discovered YRT, and I'm also an habitue of Yahoo Answers, where I endure bad spelling and nonexistent punctuation in order to offer guidance to young people. My profile picture [avatar] is of me, taken in about 1963, judging from the roller skates and my godparents' 1962 Chevy that was originally in the background. Just to make myself a little more interesting, I am currently homeless, living in one motel room or another, or occasionally staying with a friend. I'm so old, I can remember when Knott's Berry Farm, Southern California's oldest theme park, had free admission, and you bought individual tickets for each attraction.

Then And Now - Melody Patterson aka Wrangler Jane Melody Patterson was best know for her role on the 60's show F Troop. She was 16 at the time but played a much older role playing Captain Parmenter girlfriend. She lied to the studio saying she was 18 at the time according to numerous internet reports. After F-Troop was cancelled in 1967 she did some TV, radio and entertained the troops in Vietnam. She married actor James MacArthur who is known for the role of Dan "Danno" Williams in the original TV series Hawaii Five-O from 1970 to 1975. She appeared in many Hawaii Five-O episodes. Born April 16, 1949 she is 64 at the time of this writing. She occasionally frequents reunion gatherings for F Troop however her official website wranglerjane.com went offline in 2005.

Featured Member- LProud aka Lori Proudman-Brown Hi to my friends at YRT! My name is Lori and I was born in upstate NY in June of 1968. I was adopted at 6 months of age and grew up on a dairy farm about an hour southwest of Albany. I love all animals so this was the perfect place for me. My parents worked hard to give me an ideal childhood and succeeded. I would often sneak out of the house as a young child to go visit my "friends" in the barn. I love to read my paternal Grandma's diaries... "Lori was up first thing this morning with toys in one hand and a cat in the other." (1972) I think it was my childhood and the wonderful & comforting memories of it that make YRT such a favorite of mine. I have 3 children, Brianna - age 19, Devon - age 16 & Kayleigh - age 11. I wish they could have grown up when I did. It seems it is more difficult for kids now. There's so much negative stuff for them out there. As much as I love the internet (making new friends, traveling to far off places without leaving home, etc) I think I had a better childhood because of not having it as part of my life. I originally went to college for journalism and dropped out because it wasn't for me. I am not one who is able to always be objective and I don't like the way you have to invade other people's privacy for the sake of a story. I went back to school in for Community/Human Services and now I work as Medicaid eligibility examiner at the Department of Social Services. I like bird watching (raptors) & before I was working full-time I would volunteer with DEC to monitor bald eagles so they could time when to band the eaglets in the Spring. I would accompany them for the local bandings which was always a thrill for me. My other hobby is weather, a real "weather-weenie" as my friends like to call me. I'm a meteorologist-wannabe who was to frightened of physics and math to pursue it as a career. I like to bowl, go fishing and am a pop-culture junkie. I have been told I have a wealth of useless information and take it as a total compliment. I stumbled upon YRT from doing a search for 70s pop culture sites and have been visiting here daily ever since. I love the way a post will prompt my memory of something else and it goes on and on. The people on this site are very welcoming and it feels like "home" on the net. Thank you Steve for the wonderful site and to all of you who help me "go back in time" every day.

The Real Voice of General Patton Probably the most common picture we have of "old blood and guts", General George Patton, is George C. Scott's portrayal. Scott's gravely baritone voice would seem perfect for the part. The real General Patton hated his voice. It tended to be high-pitched, nasal, irritating, and at times, it bordered on effeminate. He hated public speaking because of this. To my knowledge, there exist only two short clips of him speaking. Because of his use of vivid imagery, cursing, ribald innuendos, and general vulgarity, his wife had all audio tapes of him speaking destroyed after his death. It was an effort on her part to clean up his image for posterity. He died in an auto accident in Europe after the end of WWII. One of his most famous speeches, is one given in front of The Third Army to prepare them for the long road to Berlin. This is the speech we hear in the opening moments of the movie "Patton". It was considerably sanitized for the movie in an effort to prevent people from avoiding the film. The actual text of that speech can be found in a number of places on the internet. He wrote of why he used vulgar language in addressing his troops. He felt they would better remember the important points if they were punched up with ribald expletives.
