Hundreds of millions of children and adults have been entranced by the magic that was Jim Henson. He had the most profound influence on children of any entertainer of his time, he adapted the ancient art of puppetry to the most modern of mediums, television, transforming both; he created a TV show that was one of the most popular on earth. But Jim Henson's greatest achievement was broader than any of those. Through his work, he helped sustain the qualities of fancifulness, warmth and consideration that have been so threatened by our coarse, cynical age. He was another of those very special individuals who gave us a reason to smile through some very tough years.

In the 60's, the most popular of Jim Henson's commercials was a series for the local Wilkins Coffee company in Washington, D.C., in which his Muppets were able to get away with a greater level of slapstick violence than might otherwise have been acceptable with human actors. The first seven-second commercial for Wilkins was an immediate hit and was syndicated and reshot by Henson for local coffee companies across the United States. He ultimately produced more than 300 coffee ads.

Here's the intrduction from a 1980 episode of Real People--a popular NBC anthology show that ran for five years. Originally designed as a 'short-flight series' in the spring of 1979, it drew surprisingly strong ratings. Naturally NBC made it a regular prime-time show. Real People featured offbeat news stories and the exploits of eccentric folks shown to a live studio audience. The show had an overabundance of hosts. Among the regular hosts were Sarah Purcell, Byron Allen, John Barbour and Skip Stephenson. Real People finshed a strong 12th in overall TV ratings for the 1980-81 season. Its success spawned the very similar That's Incredible! on ABC. Here's a little-known fact: Richard Simmons was first widely exposed to American TV audiences on Real People.

Wayne Gretzky was a well known figure in hockey circles in Canada when he was a preteen. As an eight-year-old in Brantford, ON he was competing against 11-year-olds on travel teams. This interview was conducted during the 1977-78 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship tournament in Canada in which a soon-to-be-17-year-old Gretzky was starring on the Canadian team. Despite Gretzky's confident prediction, Canada finished third in the tourney. The smooth-voiced Bill Stephenson is the easygoing interviewer. He was a familiar Canadian radio announcer for many years.
