One of the weirder phenomena of the 1920s was the popularity of flagpole-sitting, a strange publicity gimmick mastered by Alvin (Shipwreck) Kelly. In 1924 Kelly was hired by a Hollywood press agent to promote a new film by sitting on the flagpole above the Los Angeles theater where the movie was playing. He remained there for 13 hours and 13 days, starting a bizarre national craze. By 1928 Kelly was earning over $100 per day for his stunts--fantastic money in those days. The apex of Kelly's career occurred in 1930 when he spent 1,177 hours atop a 125-foot flagpole at Atlantic City's Steel Pier. The Great Depression, however, diminished the public's appetite for such stunts. By the end of 1930 Kelly's stunts were earning him little more than pocket change. His last public appearance of any significance occurred in 1939. Broke and on welfare, Kelly dropped dead in 1952 while walking between two parked cars in New York City. Clutched tightly in one arm was a scrapbook containing clippings and momentos from his glory days as King of the Flagpole Sitters.

The 1920's, a decade of dissipation, of jazz bands, raccoon coats, bathtub gin, flappers, flagpole sitters, bootleggers, marathon dancers, and bathing beauties. A decade when America truly came of age.

It was one of those sports moments that wasn't about sports: On April 25, 1976 at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, Rick Monday of the Chicago Cubs heroically snatched an American flag that was about to be set alight by two radical protesters. Monday recalls the event in an interview 30 years later.

One of the most famous and powerful images of the Second World War: Joe Rosenthal's dramatic photo of the Marines raising the American flag atop Mount Suribachi during the horrendously bloody Battle of Iwo Jima on February 23, 1945. (Actually only five of the six are Marines; one is a Navy corpsman.) Three of the men pictured here were killed in action before the terrible battle finally ended more than a month later.

Oh, no! It's the summer of 1983 and Sports Illustrated presents this horrible scenario: The Montreal Expos might win the National League pennant and the Toronto Blue Jays are threatening to win the American League flag. Brace yourselves. This would mean (gasp!) an all-Canadian World Series! We can't have that! (Luckily for xenophobic American baseball fans, neither the Expos or the Jays won the pennant that year. Whew! That's a relief!)
