Troll . . .and, i was just saying that i 'didn't get' the fascination with Cabbage Patch Dolls!! but i loved these! "Troll dolls, originally known as Leprocauns and also known as Dam dolls, Wishniks, Treasure Trolls, and Norfins, became one of America's biggest toy fads beginning in the autumn of 1963, and lasting throughout 1965. With their brightly colored hair and cute faces, they were featured in both Life Magazine and Time Magazine in articles which commented on the "good luck" they would bring to their owners."

Hindenburg Disaster 1937 It was the largest airship ever built; over eight-hundred feet long from its nose to its massive tail fins. It was the height of luxury travel and carried over 2,656 people across the Atlantic from Germany to New York and Rio de Janeiro. It was the Hindenburg. In the space of 37 seconds the mighty zeppelin was destroyed in a fire that killed a third of its crew and passengers and left spectators crying in horror.

1908 Olympic Games Here's a minute of film from the 1908 Olympics in London. The opening clip shows the famous finish to the marathon: Italy's Dorando Pietri staggering into the stadium, collapsing, and being assisted across the finsh line. (Pietri was properly disqualified.) You have to love the pole vaulter landing on his feet in the sand. There were no sissy landing mats in 1908!

Only Film Clip of Houdini Funeral On November 4,1926 Harry Houdini was buried in New York at Machphela Cemetery. 2,000 mourners attended. The short black and white film clip is as enigmatic as the man himself. He was interred in one of his own stunt coffins at age 52.

Real People - NBC Show Here's the intrduction from a 1980 episode of Real People--a popular NBC anthology show that ran for five years. Originally designed as a 'short-flight series' in the spring of 1979, it drew surprisingly strong ratings. Naturally NBC made it a regular prime-time show. Real People featured offbeat news stories and the exploits of eccentric folks shown to a live studio audience. The show had an overabundance of hosts. Among the regular hosts were Sarah Purcell, Byron Allen, John Barbour and Skip Stephenson. Real People finshed a strong 12th in overall TV ratings for the 1980-81 season. Its success spawned the very similar That's Incredible! on ABC. Here's a little-known fact: Richard Simmons was first widely exposed to American TV audiences on Real People.

Mad Magazine Introduces 43-Man Squamish As an amusing parody of big-time NCAA athletics, the June 1965 edition of Mad magazine introduced a new collegiate sport devised by writer Tom Koch: 43-man squamish. The rules call for squamish to be played on a pentagonal-shaped field called a fluteney in which the two teams line up on opposite ends to start play. (Think about it.) A squamish game is comprised of seven ogres of 15 minutes each--or eight ogres if it rains. Players are outfitted in polo helmets and swim fins and carry long hooked sticks called frullips. The object of squamish is to advance the pritz (a ball made of untreated ibex hide and stuffed with blue jay feathers) beyond the opponents' goal line to score woomiks (worth 17 points each) or durmishes (worth 11 point each). Some of the positions include left overblats, outside grouches, offensive niblings, and a dummy. The game's officials include a probate judge and a baggage smasher. This illustration shows what a first-rate collegiate squamish team would look like.
