British First World War Executions During the First World War, the British army executed more than 300 of its own soldiers who were convicted of cowardice. Many of these troops had suffered mental breakdowns because of the horrors of trench warfare. A movement is now afoot to have them posthumously pardoned.

Leon Czolgosz Execution This is a re-creation of the execution of Leon Czolgosz. Czolgosz was a self-styled anarchist who shot president William McKinley at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York on September 6, 1901. McKinley, struck twice at point-blank range, died of his wounds eight days later. There was swift justice in those days: Czolgosz's trial took place on September 23. It lasted a little more than eight hours. Czolgosz was convicted of murder and sentenced to die in the electric chair in Auburn, New York on October 29. Thomas Edison's company filmed this re-creation of the execution based on the testimony of witnesses.

Last Public Guillotine Execution 1939 Beginning in 1793, death by guillotine was the official method of capital punishment in France. Public executions were the norm and attracted large, enthusiastic crowds. The last criminal to be publicly executed in France was multiple murderer Eugen Weidmann who lost his head on June 17, 1939. His execution was clandestinely filmed by a spectator from his apartment window. (This photo is a frame of that film.) The wild exuberance of the crowd prompted the French government to cease all further public executions. Still, the death penalty remained on the books in France until 1981. The last guillotine customer was torture-murderer Hamida Djandoubi who assumed room temperature, away from the eyes of the public, on September 10, 1977.
