AL JOLSON in BIG BOY LIZA LEE Performing in blackface makeup was a theatrical convention used by many entertainers at the beginning of the 20th century, having its origin in the minstrel show. Most early American stage actors performed with the aid of costume and makeup, often as characters of other nationalities and races. Al Jolson was the most famous performer to wear blackface makeup when singing, though this is now considered a form of racial stereotyping. However, by the standards of stagecraft of the day, it was considered no more than another stage costume or prop.

Curious Death of Thelma Todd Thelma Todd was a pretty blonde Hollywood actress who got her start in movies after she won some beauty contests in Massachusetts. Todd appeared in about 120 movies from 1926 through 1935. On the morning of Monday, December 16, 1935, the 29-year-old Todd was found dead in her car inside a garage belonging to Jewel Carmen, a former actress. Carmen was the former wife of Todd's lover and business partner Roland West. An autopsy determined Todd's death to have been caused by carbon monoxide poisoning. Todd had a wide circle of friends as well as a busy social life. A subsequent police investigation revealed that Todd had spent the last night of her life at the Trocadero, a popular Hollywood restaurant, at a party hosted by entertainer Stanley Lupino and Ida, his actress daughter. At the restaurant, Todd had a brief, unpleasant exchange with her ex-husband, Pat DeCicco. However, her friends stated that she was in good spirits, and were unaware of anything in her life that could suggest a reason for suicide. Nevertheless, suicide was the verdict of a Grand Jury. LAPD detectives first concluded that Todd's death was accidental, the result of her either warming up the car to drive it or using the heater to keep herself warm. Other evidence, however, points to foul play. Some Hollywood buffs believe Todd was the target of extortion and was killed fo refusing to pay. It is also possible that she was locked in the garage by her assailant after she started the car. Blood from a wound was found on her face and dress, leading some to the conclusion she was knocked unconscious and placed in the car to succumb to carbon monoxide poisoning. Todd's body was cremated, thus no further autopsies could be performed. Her death certificate states the cause of death as accidental carbon monoxide poisoning.

Le Petomane - Professional Farter Le Pétomane was the stage name of French flatulist (professional farter) Joseph Pujol. He was famous for his remarkable control of the abdominal muscles which enabled him to fart at will. His stage name combines the French verb péter, 'to fart' with the -mane, '-maniac' suffix, which translates to 'fartomaniac'. Pujol was 'gifted' in the sense that he was able to inhale water or air into his rectum and then control the release of it using his sphincter muscles (avoiding any associated odor). When Pujol joined the army he told his fellow soldiers about his special ability, and repeated it for their amusement, sucking up water from a pan into his rectum and then projecting it through his anus up to several yards. He then found that he could suck in air as well. Although a baker by profession, Pujol would entertain his customers by imitating musical instruments, and claim to be playing them behind the counter. Pujol decided to try his talent on the stage, and debuted in Marseille in 1887. After his act proved successful, he proceeded to Paris, where he took the act to the Moulin Rouge in 1892. Some of the highlights of his stage act involved sound effects of cannon fire and thunderstorms, as well as playing 'O Sole Mio' and 'La Marseillaise' on an ocarina through a rubber tube in his anus. He could also blow out a candle from several yards away. He performed before various VIPs, including the Prince of Wales, King Leopold II of the Belgians, and Sigmund Freud. In 1894, as a star attraction at the Moulin Rouge, Pujol was earning 20,000 francs per performance. In the following decade Pujol tried to 'refine' his acts to make them 'gentler.' One of his favorite numbers was a rhyme about a farm which he himself composed--and which he punctuated with the usual anal renditions of the animals' sounds. The climax of Pujol's act was his farting impression of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.

Bill Cosby Rails Against Bad English In 2004 entertainer Bill Cosby found himself in hot water for speaking his mind. During an NAACP celebration marking the 50th anniversary of the Brown v. Board of Education school-desegregation decision by the U.S. Supreme Court, Cosby upbraided poor black parents for buying their children expensive sneakers but not teaching them proper English. "These people marched and were hit in the face with rocks to get an education--and now we've got these knuckleheads walking around," Cosby said at the event. "I can't even talk the way these people talk: 'Why you ain't,' 'Where you is' ... and I blamed the kid until I heard the mother talk," Cosby continued. "And then I heard the father talk. ... Everybody knows it's important to speak [proper] English except these knuckleheads. You can't be a doctor with that kind of crap coming out of your mouth." After his comments sparked a nationwide debate, Cosby was surprised at some of the negative reactions. He said in a statement that he meant for his remarks to be a call to action to improve the overall English skills of black students.

Avery Brundage Avery Brundage was the only American ever to become president of the International Olympic Committee--a position he held from 1952 to 1972. He was also the most controversial IOC head. Brundage had competed at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics in the decathlon and pentathlon. He later acquired significant wealth from his contruction company combined with some shrewd investments. His vast fortune skewed his views of amateurism. Since he was independently wealthy, he could not see why every other amateur athlete could not be self-sufficient too. As a result, Brundage believed the only true athletes were amateurs. He denounced pro athletes as entertainers. Brundage rose to become head of the United States Olympic Committee by 1936. That year he controversially allowed the American team to compete in the Berlin Olympics despite heavy public pressure to boycott the Nazi-themed Games. He personally disqualified one notable female American athlete, swimmer Eleanor Holm, for allegedly engaging in immoral behavior on the team's ocean voyage to Hamburg. (Years later Holm claimed she had rebuffed the married Brundage's advances and he suspended her out of spite.) After the 1936 Games, Brundage openly praised Nazi Germany's economic resurgence and newfound national pride. By 1952 he became head of the IOC and a staunch defender of pure amateur sports, saying that the ideal Olympian should be a Renaissance person with many interests--not just the financial benefits of being a pro athlete. Critics labelled him "Slavery Avery." Despite being anti-communist, Brundage was impressed by the Soviet Union's national physical fitness programs and was instrumental in getting the USSR into the Olympic movement. Brundage was still at the helm of the IOC at age 85 in 1972 when a terrorist attack killed 11 Israeli team members. Brundage called for a day of mourning and then insisted the Games continue-- a decision still controversial today. In one of his final public speeches as IOC head, Brundage favored abolishing the Winter Olympics because of their growing commercialization. He died in 1975.
