Erich Kaestner, believed to be the last surviving German First World War veteran, died on January 1, 2008 at the age of 107. While other countries have held--or plan to hold--state funerals for their last serviceman from the Great War, Kaestner's death went almost unnoticed in Germany. Several weeks went by before the media was alerted by a Wikipedia update. Curiously, the German government does not keep official records of its WWI and WWII veterans. In Kaestner's later years he often received autograph requests from Americans. He never answered them.

Wow, I'm only in my 40s, but it seems hard to believe Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and the Big Bopper have been gone for over 50 years now! This is an appearance The Crickets made on Arthur Murray Dance Party in 1957. Some American Bandstand compilations include this video, despite the fact that it wasn't actually performed on the show. According to Dick Clark, Buddy Holly and the Crickets only appeared once on AB, in the fall of 1958, playing the song Heartbeat, and that the footage of that single event was destroyed sometime in the 1970s. Sad news indeed. That AB episode was Buddys last TV performance before the tragedy.

Here's one for the archives! Colonel Harland Sanders, the magnate of Kentucky Fried Chicken, appears on What's My Line as a regular contestant on December 1, 1963. Even though there were more than 900 KFC restaurants in existence at the time, the panel does not know who he is! Unbelievable!

In the 1981-82 season Wayne Gretzky of the Edmonton Oilers reached the unbelieveable total of 50 goals in just 39 games. His scored five goals in the 39th game, on December 30, 1981, to reach the milestone.

This is a 1985 CBC report on the introduction of the less-than-beloved New Coke. I'm cynical enough to believe this whole New Coke business was a carefully orchestrated plot. Coca-Cola got millions of dollars of free advertising out of their self-made controversy.
