British stop motion animated children's television series. The first episode was broadcast by the BBC on November 16, 1969 and a further twenty-five episodes were made. The twenty sixth episode was broadcast on November 10, 1972 and the final Clangers programme was a four minute election special on October 10, 1974. The programme featured a number of small creatures living in peace and harmony on - and in - a small, hollow planet far far away, nourished by Blue String Pudding, and Green Soup harvested from the planet's volcanic soup wells by the Soup Dragon. The Clangers looked similar to mice and anteaters, though they were pink, wore clothes, and spoke in whistles. These whistles (performed on swanee whistles)followed the rhythm and intonation of a script in the English language, including swear-words!

Except for one year, all Canadian coins have featured the phrase 'DEI GRA' or 'DEI GRATIA' on the obverse side. The Latin words mean 'by the grace of God' and refer to the reign of the monarch whose likeness appears on the coin. The year 1911 was the lone exception. George V had ascended to the throne in 1910, so 1911 was the first year he was featured on British Empire coinage. Because of an oversight or a misunderstanding (nobody is quite certain), the phrase was omitted from Canadian coins in 1911--much to the outrage of the public. (Some people blame the Liberal goverment's defeat in the federal election that year on the 'godless' coins.) The phrase was restored to Canadian coinage in 1912 and has appeared every year since then.

This clip is an excerpt from an old 50's TV program called 'You Asked For It', a popular human-interest show that originally aired on TV between 1950-59. On the show, viewers were asked to send in postcards describing something that they wanted to see on television, such as the reenactment of William Tell shooting an apple off his son's head. (1950 US National Archery Champion Stan Overby performed the feat, shooting an apple off his assistant's head.) Short film clips were also presented, with the selections based upon viewer requests. As a consequence, many of the clips were presented multiple times. Some of the more popular clips included a tour of the bizarre Winchester Mystery House and the collapse of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. The program was named 'The Art Baker Show', after the series creator and host. In April 1951, the show's title was changed to 'You Asked For It'. Originally airing on the cash-strapped DuMont Network from December 1950 to December 1951, it moved to ABC, where it remained until the end of its original run in September 1959. The show was sponsored by Skippy peanut butter and Studebaker Automobiles. I remember watching this series as a kid, but if I'd seen this show it would have definitely stood out in my memory!
No way did this man perform this 'feat', but it sure must have left kids wondering back then..he probably had the bullet already in his mouth and the officer was shooting blanks...duh..I mean..shooting a real bullet almost point blank into a man's face on live tv is going to be messy, to say the least..

Wendell Willkie was the Republic candidate in the 1940 U.S. presidential election. He interestingly classifies himself as a liberal--but one who opposes FDR's New Deal spending.

The infamous headline in the Chicago Daily Tribune that prematurely declared Thomas Dewey the winner of the 1948 U.S. presidential election based on early projections. Harry Truman got a kick out of it.

Ralph Nader will be running for President again this election. His only claim to fame was taking this car off the market back in the 60s. I only bring this to your attention because one if not two generations have no idea who Ralph Nader is. Google his book that took this car off the road Unsafe at Any Speed and you will find so many saying Nader was wrong.

Remember Denver hosting the 1976 Winter Olympics? No? That's because the Colorado capital was supposed to host the Games but didn't. In May 1970, the International Olympic Committee chose Denver to host '76 Winter Games ahead of bids from locales in Switzerland, Finland, and Canada. The USOC was ecstatic, but the taxpayers of Colorado were far less enthusiastic when they learned they would be footing much of the Games' costs. Within a very short time, an anti-Games movement grew in the state. During the 1972 election campaign, a plebiscite asked Coloradoans what they thought about a $5-million bond issue to finance the Games. On the same night Richard Nixon was re-elected, Colorado voters rejected the bond issue by a substantial 60/40 ratio. (In retrospect, that $5 million would have only covered a small fraction of the Games' actual costs.) A week after the voters spoke, Denver officially withdrew as the host city for 1976 Winter Olympics. The Games were hastily given to Innsbruck, Austria--where the 1964 Games had been held--because the facilities were already in place.

Think presidential election campaigns are nasty now? They're quite tame compared to the good old days. In 1884 the Democrats learned that Republican candidate Grover Cleveland was making chid support payments to a young woman named Maria Halpirn. Cleveland admitted he may have been the child's father, but there were numerous other prominent men who had sampled the horizontal refreshments in the willing Miss Halpirn's boudoir. (Cleveland apparently took responsbility because he was the only bachelor among Miss Halpirn's plentiful beaus!) Democrats mocked Cleveland with the chant, 'Ma! Ma! Where's my pa?' After Cleveland won the election, the Dems added, 'Gone to the White House...ha, ha, ha!'
