One of the first major 'ongoing' news stories to be covered live on television was the coal mining disaster in Springhill, Nova Scotia, Canada on October 23, 1958. That night 174 miners were trapped 13,000 feet below ground when a 'bump' caused a huge section of the mine to collapse. It was the third major disaster at the mine since 1891. Exactly 100 miners were rescued; some were trapped for five days before being saved. The bodies of the other 74 were all eventually recovered. Because of the heat at that depth, many of the corpses had badly decomposed by the time they were found. The mine never reopened.

On May 10, 1937, in Lakehurst, NJ, thirty-five persons died and scores of others were injured as the Hindenberg dirigible exploded three hundred feet over the landing field at the end of her first voyage of the season from Europe. A terrific burst of flame engulfed the stern of the ship and spread with the rapidity of lightning to the bow. The inferno of blazing hydrogen gas cremated all living beings in its path, as the twisted skeleton of the balloon settled quickly to the ground. Rescue crews braved death to save sixty-three persons, some of them horribly burned.

Original footage from May 6, 1937 of the German zeppelin Hindenburg bursting into flames and crashing as it was preparing to land at Lakehurst Naval Base in New Jersey. This was the first major disaster captured on film as it happened. Remarkably, most of the people onboard survived. Of the 97 passesngers and crew, only 35 people perished. (One member of the ground crew was killed too.) The cause of the fire has never been determined. The Hindenburg was doomed once the fire started because it used highly flammable hydrogen as a lift gas. It only took 34 seconds for the ship to burn. This catastrophe effectively ended the era of zeppelin travel.

On January 20, 1961 a game show called You're In The Picture, hosted by Jackie Gleason, debuted on CBS. It was a disaster and the TV critics savaged it. The next week, instead of hosting the game show, Gleason appeared on the air to apologize for 'the bomb.' This time the critics loved Gleason's candor and praised him! This clip shows about a minute of Gleason explaining the game show's rules on January 20 and about eight minutes of his apology from January 27.

It was the largest airship ever built; over eight-hundred feet long from its nose to its massive tail fins. It was the height of luxury travel and carried over 2,656 people across the Atlantic from Germany to New York and Rio de Janeiro. It was the Hindenburg. In the space of 37 seconds the mighty zeppelin was destroyed in a fire that killed a third of its crew and passengers and left spectators crying in horror.

An almost forgotten maritime tragedy is the sinking of The Empress of Ireland, a trans-Atlantic ocean liner owned by the Canadian Pacific Steamship Company. At about 2 a.m. on May 29, 1914, during one of its regular voyages from Quebec City to Liverpool, it collided with the Norwegian ship Storstad in the cold waters of the St. Lawrence River. Out of the 1,477 passengers aboard, 1,012 perished. The high death toll was largely attributable to how quickly the ship sank (14 minutes) and that most of the passengers were in bed when the accident occurred. Among the dead were 167 Salvation Army musicians who were travelling to England to perform at a charity function. A Canadian inquiry into the disaster blamed the Storstad for the collision while a Norwegian inquiry blamed the Empress of Ireland. For years the Empress of Ireland was visited by scuba divers who plundered some of its valuables. However, it is now illegal to dive near the wreck as the Canadian government has declared it a maritime gravesite. (There are human remains inside the ship.) There are no living survivors from that awful night. The last one died in 1985.
