Denver Broncos Vertical Striped Socks The most hideous sports uniforms of all time may have been donned by the American Football League's Denver Broncos in 1960 and 1961. The ugly mustard-colored jerseys were awful, but the true eyesores were the stirrup socks with vertical stripes. They were the idea of Dean Griffing, the Broncos' general manager, who insisted the unique socks made the players look taller. Perhaps, but they also unquestionably looked silly. The media derided them as 'clown socks.' So reviled was the hosiery that when the Broncos' uniforms got a complete makeover in 1962, more than 8,300 people attended a ceremony in which the socks were tossed into a large bonfire. A few pairs escaped the flames, though. One set is on display at the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Some players retained their socks as keepsakes. An authentic pair is apparently worth $500 on the sports collectibles market.

Denver Declines 1976 Winter Olympics Remember Denver hosting the 1976 Winter Olympics? No? That's because the Colorado capital was supposed to host the Games but didn't. In May 1970, the International Olympic Committee chose Denver to host '76 Winter Games ahead of bids from locales in Switzerland, Finland, and Canada. The USOC was ecstatic, but the taxpayers of Colorado were far less enthusiastic when they learned they would be footing much of the Games' costs. Within a very short time, an anti-Games movement grew in the state. During the 1972 election campaign, a plebiscite asked Coloradoans what they thought about a $5-million bond issue to finance the Games. On the same night Richard Nixon was re-elected, Colorado voters rejected the bond issue by a substantial 60/40 ratio. (In retrospect, that $5 million would have only covered a small fraction of the Games' actual costs.) A week after the voters spoke, Denver officially withdrew as the host city for 1976 Winter Olympics. The Games were hastily given to Innsbruck, Austria--where the 1964 Games had been held--because the facilities were already in place.

The Eagle and the Hawk I vividly remember going to see John Denver at Saratoga Performing Arts Center when I was about 5 or 6 years old and hearing this song. There was a big screen in back of John with eagles and hawks flying. I was totally enthralled by it. I believe my love of the eagle, and the hawk, come from this moment in my life. (That and when I viewed my first bald eagle soaring over our school when I was in first grade). There's something magical about them. Their grace, beauty and power never cease to captivate me. This compilation is from various concerts from the 70s and 80s.

Saturday Night Live With Howard Cosell Saturday Night Live with Howard Cosell was a dreadful variety program that ran on ABC from September 1975 to January 1976. It, of course, was hosted by sports announcer Howard Cosell and produced by Roone Arledge of Monday Night Football fame. It was later remembered by its director Don Mischer as 'one of the greatest disasters in the history of television,' largely due to Cosell and Arledge being unfamiliar with comedy and variety programming. Coincidentally, that same year NBC began airing a late-night comedy show titled Saturday Night. The shows did not directly compete. (Cosell's program aired at 8 p.m. whereas NBC's show aired at 11:30 p.m.) Cosell's show featured Bill Murray, Brian Doyle-Murray, and Christopher Guest as regular comedy performers dubbed 'The Prime Time Players.' In response, the NBC show called its regular performers 'the Not-Ready-For-Prime-Time Players.' Ironically, all three of the original Prime Time Players eventually joined the NBC show. The premiere episode featured celebrity guests Frank Sinatra, Shirley Bassey, Paul Anka, Siegfried and Roy, the cast of the Broadway version of The Wiz, Jimmy Connors, John Denver and the Bay City Rollers (whom Cosell dubbed 'the next British phenomenon'). The show was often hectic and unprepared. In one instance, Arledge learned that Lionel Hampton was in New York City and invited the musician to appear just an hour before airtime. The show fared poorly among critics and audiences alike, with TV Guide calling it 'dead on arrival, with a cringingly awkward host.' Alan King, the show's 'executive in charge of comedy,' admitted it was difficult to turn Cosell into a variety show host, saying Cosell 'made Ed Sullivan look like Buster Keaton.' Saturday Night Live with Howard Cosell was canceled on January 17, 1976, after only 18 episodes. A year later, in 1977, NBC's Saturday Night was renamed Saturday Night Live.
