Dagwood sandwiches are enormous creations comprised of numerous leftover meats and vegetables, often with extra slices of bread in the middle. The name originated from the Dagwood Bumstead character in the popular newspaper comic strip Blondie, who frequently snacked on this type of oversized sandwich. The first such sandwich is believed to have appeared in the Blondie comic strip in 1936. A small chain of Dagwood Sandwich shops exists today. One item on the menu is an enormous Dagwood that weighs 1.5 pounds!
