Tennis Romance - 1974 Some historians point to 1974 as the year when pro tennis made its first major impact on the sports world. Adding to the allure of the game was a romance between the top male player in the world and the top female player: Jimmy Connors and Chris Evert. Each won at Wimbledon that summer and a wedding date was set for November. Alas, their relationship fell apart. Jimmy has been married to Patti McGuire, Playboy Magazine's 1977 Playmate of the Year, since 1979. Chrissie has had three marriages end in divorce.

McEnroe vs Connors - Wimbledon 1977 At the 1977 edition of Wimbledon, a surprise semifinalist in the men's draw was 18-year-old John McEnroe. To even get into the main draw McEnroe had to win three qualifying matches. He then won five matches in the main draw to earn a match with Jimmy Connors. It was the first of 34 career meetings between the two American stars. Here are three minutes of highlights from that 1977 Connors-McEnroe Wimbledon semifinal, won by Connors 6-3, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. McEnroe hadn't yet developed his famous and unique serving style. If you listen closely, you'll also notice that the chair umpire didn't quite get the pronunciation of McEnroe's last name correct!

Connors-Rosewall 1974 U.S. Open Final Twenty-two-year-old Jimmy Connors showed that experience was no match for youth in the 1974 U.S. Open final. He throttled 39-year-old Ken Rosewall 6-1, 6-0, 6-1 in the last men's final ever played on the grass courts at Forest Hills. Here are some moments from the first and last games of the third set. Connors had beaten Rosewall almost as easily in the Wimbledon final two months earlier. The Grand Slam tourney remained at Forest Hills for another three years, but the surface was changed to clay. In 1978 the U.S. Open moved to its present and more spacious venue at Flushing Meadows, NY with its hard courts. Connors earned $22,500 for winning the 1974 event--pocket change by today's lofty standards.
