I was surprised to discover no one had yet posted a clip of Queen Elizabeth's coronation--so I took the liberty of doing it. On February 6, 1952, George VI, the reigning monarch of the British Commonwealth, died from smoking-related health problems. He was just 56 years old. By the rules of succession, his eldest daughter, 25-year-old Elizabeth, became the new Queen. She was making a goodwill tour of Kenya when she learned she was the new British monarch. Her ceremonial coronation took more than a year to plan. It finally occurred on June 2, 1953. Here is a four-minute clip of her receiving the various symbols of power. Because coronations happen so rarely--and this is the most recent--few people realize how religious the ceremony is. (The monarch is supposed to be "the Defender of the Faith.") Recorded for posterity in spectacularly rich color, the film looks like it could have been shot yesterday--not in 1953. Because satellite broadcasting was not yet a reality, special arrangements were made for North American TV viewers to see the event as soon as possible. The undeveloped film of the ceremony was put aboard a Canadian fighter jet. A technician developed the film in a dark room while the plane was over the Atlantic. About five hours after the event occurred, the airplane landed in Canada. The freshly developed film was rushed to a CBC broadcast studio where it aired throughout Canada. American networks picked up the CBC's feed. Elizabeth II recently celebrated her 89th birthday. If she lives past the first week of September 2015, she will surpass Queen Victoria (her great-great-grandmother) as the longest-reigning monarch in British history. There's no reason to believe she won't attain that milestone. By all accounts Elizabeth II enjoys excellent health, she is still quite active, and her mother lived to be 102 years old.

On November 19, 1863, the National Military Cemetery in Gettyburg, Pennsylvania was officially dedicated. The Battle of Gettysburg lasted three days, from July 1 to 3, 1863. Some 150,000 men engaged in the Civil War's most important engagement--and some 50,000 of them became casualties. Edward Everett, a famed orator, was the keynote speaker at the dedication ceremony five months later. He spoke for two hours. President Abraham Lincoln was invited--almost as an afterthought--to make a few appropriate remarks. He followed Everett and spoke for just two minutes. Lincoln's brief speech remains the most stirring in American history.

Before 1936, the opening ceremonies for the Olympic Games were generally low-key. However, Nazi Germany turned them into a well choreographed event. All Olympic opening ceremonies since then have been influenced by what took place in Berlin in 1936.

The most hideous sports uniforms of all time may have been donned by the American Football League's Denver Broncos in 1960 and 1961. The ugly mustard-colored jerseys were awful, but the true eyesores were the stirrup socks with vertical stripes. They were the idea of Dean Griffing, the Broncos' general manager, who insisted the unique socks made the players look taller. Perhaps, but they also unquestionably looked silly. The media derided them as 'clown socks.' So reviled was the hosiery that when the Broncos' uniforms got a complete makeover in 1962, more than 8,300 people attended a ceremony in which the socks were tossed into a large bonfire. A few pairs escaped the flames, though. One set is on display at the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Some players retained their socks as keepsakes. An authentic pair is apparently worth $500 on the sports collectibles market.

John Wayne married Josephine Saenz, daughter of the Panamanian Consul in Los Angeles on June 23, 1933. After the ceremony, the couple and guests celebrated at the home of Loretta Young (right).
Wayne divorced Josephine in 1945 after he met the woman who would become his second wife, Esperanza Baur. Their rocky marriage lasted until 1953 when Wayne met Pilar Pallete, the daughter of a Peruvian Senator. Pallete was married to Wayne until his death in 1979 from lung cancer. . .

This photo, taken in Canada in 1941, has been the cause of considerable speculation. It was taken at a public ceremony in British Columbia to celebrate the reopening of the South Fork Bridge. Look at the individual with the clothing that seems to be from an era in the future. He is wearing what looks like modern sunglasses and a printed t-shirt--not items of clothing one would see in 1941.

At 5:12 a.m. on April 18, 1906 The San Francisco Bay area erupted as the earth unleashed her fury. The violent shocks punctuated the strong shaking which lasting nearly 60 seconds. The quake was felt from southern Oregon to south of Los Angeles and inland as far as central Nevada. The ground had ripped open for more than 270 miles along a great fault - the San Andreas rift. The quake lasted only a minute but caused the one of the worst natural disaster in the nation's history. The damages were estimated at $400,000,000 in 1906 dollars, That would translate to nearly 10 billion dollars today.
