USS America CV66 Last Cruise The third USS America (CV-66), formerly CVA-66, was a Kitty Hawk class supercarrier of the United States Navy that served from 1965 to 1996. She was the fifth U.S. Navy ship to bear the name. Originally ordered as an Enterprise-class nuclear carrier, the ballooning costs of Enterprise during construction caused the cancellation of the nuclear CVAN-66 and her reordering as a conventionally-powered Kitty Hawk-class carrier. She would still be operational if it was a nuclear ship. She was decommissioned in a ceremony at Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, Va on 9 August 1996.America was planned to be sold for scrapping. However, she was chosen to be a live-fire test and evaluation platform in 2005, to aid the design of future aircraft carriers. After the completion of the tests, America was sunk in a controlled scuttling on 14 May 2005 at approximately 11:30, although the sinking was not publicized until six days later. At the time, no warship of that size had ever been sunk, and effects were closely monitored; theoretically the tests would reveal data about how supercarriers respond to battle damage. The ship rests 16,860 ft. below the Atlantic Ocean surface, roughly 250 miles off the North Carolina coast

Brady Bunch - Final Episode The final first-run episode of The Brady Bunch aired 40 years ago today: Friday, March 8, 1974. It was the 116th installment of the show. Robert Reed (who played father Mike Brady) thought the script was so bad he refused to appear in the episode. Here's the plot: The two youngest Brady kids come up with separate ideas to make a fortune. Bobby acquires a case of hair tonic from a mail-order company and tries to sell the stuff door-to-door at $2 a bottle. Cindy intends to breed rabbits. Bobby has no luck as a salesman. Oldest brother Greg--who is about to graduate from high school--takes pity on Bobby and buys a bottle of the tonic. When he uses it, however, his hair turns a ghastly shade of bright orange! Five shampoos only serve to make Greg's hair even more hideous. Eventually a dye job at Carol Brady's favorite beauty parlor restores Greg's hair to its normal shade of black just in time for his big night where he graduates with honors. (Mike is noticeably absent when the family returns home from the ceremony. He is said to be out of town on business.) Meanwhile, Cindy's rabbit-breeding efforts are in vain because she discovers she has only male rabbits. When Bobby tries to pour his unsold tonic down a drain, he accidentally spills some of it on Cindy's rabbits. Bobby and Cindy agree to make the best of the situation by selling orange rabbits. By the 1973-74 season, The Brady Bunch was in severe decline. The kids were all over 12 years old and the show's original premise of two families merging into one was long gone. In an attempt to appeal to a younger demographic, Robbie Rist was brought in as Cousin Oliver for the final six shows. It didn't work. NBC's Sanford and Son was clobbering The Brady Bunch in the ratings so ABC pulled the plug. The last rerun aired on ABC on August 30, 1974. Still, the remarkable cult following of The Brady Bunch was strong enough to garner three failed reincarnations: The Brady Bunch Variety Hour, The Brady Brides, and The Bradys. A 1988 Brady-based made-for-TV Christmas movie drew enormous ratings.

Johnny Mostil Suicide Attempt 1927 The 1927 Chicago White Sox were baseball's version of a soap opera. During spring training in Shreveport, LA, popular center fielder Johnny Mostil attempted suicide with a razor. He was discovered in a booster's hotel room lying in a pool of his own blood. Several teammates administered first aid, got him medical treatment and saved his life. (Two Shreveport doctors later sued Mostil and the White Sox for non-payment of $6,000 in medical bills.) What prompted Mostil's out-of-the-blue suicide attempt? The official team statement said Mostil was feeling the negative effects of a painful bout of neuritis. However, the whispers were much more interesting. Mostil was rumored to be having an affair with Irene Faber, the wife of White Sox pitcher Red Faber. Shortly after the suicide attempt, Mostil's girlfriend, Margaret Caroll, began dating Bill Barrett, another White Sox player. The two eventually married. Mostil did not play until September. By 1929 his career was over. He died in 1970.
