Henry Fonda as a psychopathic bad guy.. No way, you say?... "Once Upon a Time in the West" was Sergio Leone's greatest Western, although Clint Eastwood's three films remain among my favorites. Leone had hoped to have Eastwood in this film as "Harmonica", but they were unable to work things out. As it is, I think having Charles Bronson in the role was more effective. It was central to Eastwood's persona in those three films that he be both a man with no name and with no past, but Bronson's character of Harmonica was entirely driven by the past and his need for revenge. He was brilliant, and his tiny, piercing blue eyes lent an eerie intensity to many of his screen moments. The casting of the equally blue-eyed Henry Fonda as a sadistic villain was a stroke of genius, and he managed to produce one of his most memorable roles. This was an incredible movie, and by far, one of the most thoughtful, unique Westerns ever made. The ending is the finest of his many westerns, as well as one of the most surprising. It easily goes on any list of the greatest westerns in the history of film.

During the sixth game of the 2004 American League Championship Series, Alex Rodriguez of the New York Yankees slapped the ball out of the glove of Boston Red Sox pitcher Bronson Arroyo who was appplying a tag. (Rodriguez was properly called out.) Some enterprising Red Sox fan doctored the photo of the 'girlie' play to show A-Rod carrying a purse. The comical photo was widely circulated on the Internet.

Death Wish was a 1974 movie loosely based on a 1972 novel by Brian Garfield. The plot focuses on the relentless vigilantism of a seemingly mild-mannered architecht Paul Kersey (Charles Bronson), a Korean War veteran. Kersey methodically pursues the band of criminals who raped and killed his wife during a home invasion. (Kersey's married daughter is also raped and suffers permanent psychological damage.) The film was notweorthy for its disturbing realism in the home-invasion scene and the ruthlessness in which Kersey stalks and mercilessly kills the culprits. The film received mixed to extremely negative reviews upon its release due to its support of vigilantism, but it had an impact on U.S. audiences. People were known to loudly cheer widely during the revenge-killing scenes. The movie did especially well at the box office in violence-plagued urban areas. Four sequels were made in the next two decades. Not surprisingly, the Death Wish films caused widespread debate over how to deal with rampant urban crime.
Many critics were displeased with the film. One declared it to be an "immoral threat to society" and an encouragement of antisocial behavior. Vincent Canby of the New York Times was one of the most outspoken writers, condemning Death Wish in two extensive articles. Author Brian Garfield was also unhappy with the how the film varied greatly from his book. He called the film 'incendiary', and stated that each of the following sequels are all pointless and rancid, since they all advocate vigilantism unlike his two novels which are the exact opposite. Bronson defended the film: He felt it was intended to be a commentary on violence and was meant to attack violence, not romanticize it. Over time many critics began to warm to the original film more than the four sequels, which were more exploitative and contrived.

The first school shooting in Canada in 73 years occurred on Wednesday, May 28, 1975 at Centennial High School in Brampton, Ontario. Just before noon, 16-year-old Michael Slobodian walked onto the campus with two high-powered hunting rifles and at least two ammunition belts. He killed John Slinger, a 17-year-old student, and Margaret Wright, a teacher in the English and art departments. Slobodian wounded 13 others before taking his own life with one of the firearms.
“It was a beautiful spring day,” recalled Lorna (Matthews) McClusky, a Grade 10 student at the time.
She walked into a hallway and heard what sounded like fire crackers. Then a girl who had been grazed by a bullet encountered her and yelled, “There’s someone shooting at people out there!”
She and others quickly retreated to a nearby classroom. They remained there, hidden, until police gave the all clear to leave. She still remembers hearing wounded students moaning and calling out for help.
That morning, 14-year-old Pam (Read) Hand was headed to her locker across from the first-floor boys' washroom. In one of those washroom stalls, Slobodian was loading his rifles to begin his deadly shooting spree.
Hand remembers stopping in the cafeteria just long enough to greet a friend and take a bite of her donut.
Meanwhile, in that washroom across from room 112, Slobodian had already fatally shot Slinger. The young victim managed to stagger into the hallway, where he collapsed and died.
Nineteen-year-old Michael Gibeault was also in the washroom at the time. He was shot three times in the stomach and once in the arm at close range. He was able to stumble out before collapsing. Critically wounded, he would survive.
Slobodian then opened fire on another boy as he made his way into the hallway, firing randomly at students in that section of the building. He walked around the corner to an art room, where he shot Mrs. Wright and another student.
A note police found in his home indicated Slobodian planned to kill Wright, science teacher Ross Bronson, and anyone who got in his way. It is unclear what the teachers had done to trigger such hostility. The school was reopened shortly afterwards and the students were urged not to dwell on the tragedy. According to a news report on the 37th anniversary of the shooting, a movement is afoot to erect a permanent memorial to the two victims killed by Slobodian.
