Bridget Bardot has turned 73. Born September 28, 1934, she is a BAFTA Awards-nominated French actress, former fashion model, singer, known nationalist, animal rights activist, and considered the embodiment of the 1950s and 1960s sex kitten. In the 1970s after her retirement from the entertainment industry, Bardot established herself as an animal rights activist, which work she continues today. During the 1990s she was outspoken about her political views on such issues as immigration, Islam in France, miscegenation, and homosexuality. She is a sympathizer with the far right. So much for fantasies.

On August 17, 1896, Mrs. Bridget Driscoll, age 44, became the first recorded autombile fatality. She stepped off a curb in the Crystal Palace section of London, England and was struck by a demonstration car travelling 4 miles per hour driven by Arthur Edsel. (Really! That was his true name!) She was knocked to the ground and suffered a severe head injury which killed her. At the inquest following Mrs. Driscoll's untimely death, the cause was ruled to be an accident and Edsel was absolved of all blame. Coroner William Percy Morrison stated that he hoped such a tragic mishap would never happen again.

Bridget Loves Bernie was a CBS sitcom that ran for just one 24-episode season in 1972-73. Starring Meredith Baxter and David Birney, it was based on the long-running Broadway play Abie's Irish Rose. The show's premise was that a young school teacher from a well-to-do Irish-American family falls in love with and marries a poor Jewish cab driver. The show was given an excellent time slot--Saturdays at 8:30 PM, between All in the Family and Mary Tyler Moore--and finished fifth in the overall ratings for the season. Why was the show cancelled? It was widely reported that Jewish groups opposed to inter-religious marriages inundated CBS with hate mail! (Officially, CBS claimed the show's ratings were disappointing.) Bridget Loves Bernie remains the highest-rated show ever to be cancelled after just one season. Birney and Baxter were later married in real life.
