Originally known as "You'll Never Get Rich" and then "The Phil Silvers Show," the granddaddy of all military sitcoms was broadcast from 1955 to 1959. Silvers starred as Master Sgt. Ernie Bilko, the con artist supreme who turns Fort Baxter into his personal base of operations for one get-rich-quick scheme after another. Harvey Lembeck, Joe E. Ross, and Maurice Gosfield as Pvt. Doberman were among the members of Bilko's platoon, and Paul Ford played the camp commander. . .

There have been a handful of sitcoms that lasted just one episode. This is one of them: the college-based Co-Ed Fever. This CBS show aired just once, on Sunday, February 4, 1979. It followed CBS' screening of the movie Rocky which drew very good ratings. When the overnight ratings for Co-Ed Fever were disappointing, CBS panicked and cancelled its commitment for at least five other episodes which were to have a Monday evening time slot. The show was set in Brewster House at Baxter College, an eastern women's school that had just recently allowed male students to enroll. Total Television calls Co-Ed Fever a "hapless sitcom." Cast member Heather Thomas, who would later have a substantial roll on The Fall Guy, once joked that Co-Ed Fever "was cancelled after the third commercial." Jane Rose, who played Mrs. Selby (the matron at Brewster House), died a few months after Co-Ed Fever was axed. Alexa Kenin (who played Mousie and later had film roles in Little Darlings and Pretty in Pink), died at age 23 in 1985. Her cause of death has never been made public. Here is the show's opening montage.

Family Ties ran for 8 years and starred Michael J. Fox as Alex P. Keaton, the conservative, business-oriented son of liberal parents Elyse and Steven (Meredith Baxter-Birney and Michael Gross). Elyse was a successful architect, while Steven ran a public television station. They lived in suburban Columbus, Ohio with their children: Alex (Michael J Fox, Mallory (Justine Bateman) and Jennifer (Tina Yothers). Another child, Andrew (Brian Bonsall), was added later.
The majority of the show's humor was derived from the tension between Alex's conservative, Republican mindset, Mallory's uninformed consumerism, and their parents' attitudes as liberal Democrats, who grew up as hippie flower children in the 1960s. This show gave Michael J Fox his shot at superstardom, and aren't we all glad it did!
This show began two spinoffs, Day by Day, which lasted two seasons, and The Art of Being Nick, which was produced as a pilot but never picked up as a series.

This is the final scene of The Mary Tyler Moore Show, one of television's greatest sitcoms. In this episode (aptly titled Last Show) all the staff members at WJM-TV News have been fired except for bumbling newscaster Ted Baxter. This is how the show wrapped things up.

As videoholic showed us, nothing quite compares to those local television shows. In Miami in the 50's and 60's we had Charlie Baxter, a newscaster, who had fun playing ghoulish 'MT Graves' down in his dungeon every Saturday afternoon on WCKT Channel 7. The program began with the cell door rising up to the sounds of screeching and squeaking and a loud clank. In the background, eerie music played, and human screaming and shrieking could be heard. M.T. climbed out of the coffin to greet his viewers at the beginning of each program, and climbed back into it at the end, saying his greetings and farewells to his fans. My dad, who did painting for several TV stations back then, took me with him one Saturday and I got to sit in the audience. What a thrill that was! It just goes to show that it doesn't take much to entertain a kid.

Here's a very funny nine-minute clip from The Mary Tyler Moore Show. A con man convinces Ted Baxter to open a school for broadcast journalists. The crook runs off with the students' tuition fees shortly before the school is to open. Ted has no idea how many students have paid $300 apiece for his ten-week course. He enlists Lou, Mary, and Murray to help get him through the first night of Ted Baxter's Famous Broadcasters School.
