2003 Masters Tournament Protest In 2003, the National Organization of Women, led by Martha Burk (pictured here), staged a protest at the Masters Golf Tournament because the host club, Augusta National Golf Club, only accepts male members. Burk got more than she bargained for. Enterprising vendors began selling golf balls with Burk's face on them above the phrase 'The Burk Stops Here!' Augusta's city council passed a law restricting protesters to a vacant lot about a mile from the golf course. Counter-protests began, and they begot more protests. Jesse Jackson supported Burk, so a group of anti-Jackson protesters picketed him. A chapter of the KKK--which turned out to be a one-man outfit--supported Augusta National. Weirdos and attention-seekers of all types flocked to the protest site. One man wore a tuxedo and carried a sign that said, 'Formal Protest.' Another man with an anti-feminist slant carried a placard saying, 'Make My Dinner.' Another group called People Against Ridiculous Protests picketed everybody. Perhaps the most noteworthy and creative protester was a gentlemen who loudly passed gas from the window of a moving minivan when Burk began to speak. Pun-loving Steve Rushin of Sports Illustrated comically referred to the gesture as a 'drive-by tooting.'

Last Public Guillotine Execution 1939 Beginning in 1793, death by guillotine was the official method of capital punishment in France. Public executions were the norm and attracted large, enthusiastic crowds. The last criminal to be publicly executed in France was multiple murderer Eugen Weidmann who lost his head on June 17, 1939. His execution was clandestinely filmed by a spectator from his apartment window. (This photo is a frame of that film.) The wild exuberance of the crowd prompted the French government to cease all further public executions. Still, the death penalty remained on the books in France until 1981. The last guillotine customer was torture-murderer Hamida Djandoubi who assumed room temperature, away from the eyes of the public, on September 10, 1977.

Rock n Rollen Rollen Frederick Stewart, also known as Rock 'n' Rollen and Rainbow Man, was a fixture in American sports culture for about a decade. He became famous for wearing a rainbow-colored afro-style wig and, later, for holding up signs reading "John 3:16" at sporting events around the United States and overseas in the 1970s and 1980s. Stewart, a born-again Christian, was determined to "get the message out" via television. He figured televised sporting events provided the best opportunities. Stewart would strategically position himself for key shots of plays or athletes. Stewart's first major appearance was at the 1977 NBA Finals where he seemed to constantly be on camera. By the time of the 1979 MLB All-Star Game, broadcasters were actively trying to avoid showing him. Undaunted, Stewart appeared behind NFL goalposts, near Olympic medal stands, and even at the Augusta National Golf Club. At the 1982 Indianapolis 500, he was behind the pits of race winner Gordon Johncock. Stewart's fame led to a Budweiser beer commercial and a Saturday Night Live parody sketch. Stewart was briefly jailed by Moscow police at the 1980 Summer Olympics for wearing a red, white, and blue afro wig. By the mid-1980s Stewart's began exhibiting irrational behavior. In the late 1980s, he began a string of stink bomb attacks. His targets included the Orange County Register, the Trinity Broadcasting Network, and a Christian bookstore. The stated intent of an attempted attack at the American Music Awards was to show the public that "God thinks this stinks." Stewart is currently serving three consecutive life sentences for a orchestrating a hostage-taking and attempted kidnapping at a California hotel in 1992. Reportedly, Stewart believed that the Rapture was due to arrive in six days. During the standoff, he threatened to shoot at airplanes taking off from nearby Los Angeles International Airport and covered his hotel room windows with "John 3:16" placards. His next parole hearing is in 2017.

Tragic Death of Martha Mansfield Pretty 24-year-old silent film actress Martha Mansfield met an untimely and ghastly end. Mansfield was shooting the film The Warrens of Virginia on November 30, 1923. During some outdoor scenes, while wearing a bulky Civil War-era dress, she took a break in her nearby parked car. Suddenly Mansfield's dress caught fire severely burning all but her neck and her face. Mansfield's chauffeur's hands were also badly burned trying to put the fire out. The cause of the fire is a bit of a mystery. Some claim it came from a match carelessly discarded from a passing car--which entered through the window of the car Mansfield was sitting in. Others think Mansfield was at fault for smoking--although no one had ever seen her smoking before. Whatever the case, she died in hospital 24 hours later.

Olympic Cheater Boris Onischenko At the 1976 Montreal Olympics a scandal enveloped the modern pentathlon competition. It centered around the Soviet Union's team captain Boris Onischenko. Entering the fencing part of the event, Onischenko, a skilled swordsman who had won medals at both the 1968 and 1972 Olympics, was paired against British captain Jim Fox. Fox complained that something was amiss with Onischenko's epee. Officials seized it and determined it had an illegal grip. Onischenko was given another epee and the match continued with Onischenko winning easily. However, further examination of Onischenko's original weapon found it had been electronically altered to register phantom hits. The Soviet team was immediately disqualified. To their credit, the rest of the Soviet modern pentathlon team shunned Onischenko (whom the world media dubbed Dishonest-chenko) for his shenanigans. The Soviet men's volleyball team threatened to throw Onischenko from the highest window of the Olympic village if they encountered him.

Judy Garland Death 1969 In March of 1969, Judy married her fifth husband, Mickey Devinko, better known as Mickey Deans. They lived together in England in a tiny mews house in Chelsea. During the evening of Saturday, June 21 1969, Judy and Mickey were watching television when they had an argument. Judy ran out the door into the street, screaming and waking the neighbors. A phone call for Judy woke Mickey at 10:40 the next morning; Judy was not sleeping in the bed. Mickey searched for her, only to find the bathroom door locked. After no response, he climbed outside to the bathroom window and entered to find Judy, sitting on the toilet. Rigor mortis had already set in. Judy Garland was dead at the age of 47. The official cause of death, according to the death certificate shown here, was accidental barbituate poisoning (quinalbarbitone). The day Judy died, legend has it, there was a tornado in Kansas.
