Whats My Line Death of Fred Allen On Saturday, March 17, 1956, What's My Line panelist Fred Allen went for a midnight stroll in New Yok City--and died of a fatal heart attack. He was 61. Less than 24 hours later, WML went on the air as usual. This clip shows how the program opened and how it closed that night.

Another Interactive Version of Whats My Line Steve asked me to try this, so here goes. Let's pretend I'm John Daly, the distinguished host of What's My Line. All of you are the panelists. You are blindfolded as the mystery guest (who exists in my mind) enters the studio. The crowd cheers as he/she signs in and takes a seat next to Mr. Daly. Your task is to identify the mystery challenger from scratch. In the tradition of WML, you will ask questions that can only be answered yes or no. Of course the mystery guest is a famous person. The one quirk is that he/she may be deceased. Good luck! May we have the first question, please.

Sophie Tucker on Whats My Line Legendary entertainer Sophie Tucker was the mystery challenger on What's My Line on December 15, 1957. (Listen for Dorothy Kilgallen's unintentionally funny question. It's a WML classic!)

Walter Brennan on Whats My Line Walter Brennan appears as a mystery challenger on this episode of What's My Line from May 12, 1957. This is one of the best voice disguises I've seen on WML. (With Walter Brennan's distinctive voice, he needed to disguise it well!)

Whats My Line Esoterica Regulars on this website know that I love this old show. (My 300-plus WML posts attest to this!) The original CBS version of What's My Line aired Sunday nights at 10:30 from February 2, 1950 to September 3, 1967. I was just three years old when it went off the air so I never saw WML during its glory days (although I frequently watched the syndicated 1968-75 version). To make up for what I missed, I've been reading everything I can about this great slice of Americana. In the comment section below, I'll be listing some esoteric facts--trivia, if you like--about this supremely classy game show. By the way, this is a publicity photo of the WML gang from 1955.

Carl Sandburg on Whats My Line Renowned writer and historian Carl Sandburg was a mystery challenger on What's My Line in 1960. He was 82 at the time. The star quality of What's My Line never ceases to amaze me.
