On April I5, 1976, Congress passed Public Law 94-266, which provided $135 million of taxpayers' funds to pay for a national swine flu inoculation campaign; that's $348,491,686 in 2009 money.
Within a few months, claims totaling $1.3 billion (1976 dollars) had been filed by victims who had suffered paralysis from the swine flu vaccine. Makers of the drug were given guarantees from the government to be immune from side-effect lawsuits.

Within days of the sinking, a United States Senate subcommittee launched an investigation into the incident, they reported that 1,517 people perished in the accident, while the British investigation placed the number at 1,490
To the gallant crews of the Titanic and the Carpathia
To the passengers ... victims and survivors alike
We remember
Uphold them with Thy saving grace.
Thou Who supports with tender might
The balanced birds in all their flight.
Lord, if the tempered winds be near,
That, having Thee, they know no fear.
-- Mary C. D. Hamilton (1915)

The Greatest Mass Rape in History
One of this century's greatest crimes, and probably one of the greatest crimes against women in history, was the mass rape of the conquered women of Europe in 1945. The rapists were mainly Red Army soldiers, some of them non-White troops from the Far East and Central Asian Republics of the Soviet Union.
As the Red Army advanced toward her in 1945, the city of Berlin had become a city virtually without men. Out of a civilian population of 2,700,000, 2,000,000 were women.
Former Soviet war correspondent Natalya Gesse recalled: "The Russian soldiers were raping every German female from eight to 80... It was an army of rapists."
The rape victims were not just Germans. Polish women also suffered. So did young Russian, Belorussian and Ukrainian women who had been sent back to Germany by the Wehrmacht for slave labor.
As Author Antony Beevor put it,
"If anything, the events of 1945 reveal how thin the veneer of civilization can be when there is little fear of retribution."

On January 15, 1919, one of the strangest disasters in American history killed 21 people in Boston. A enormous holding tank belonging to the Purity Distilling Company containing 2.3 million gallons of molasses burst under pressure. (Molasses was a common sweetener of the era; it could also be distilled into alcohol.) A tidal wave of the sticky goo anywhere from 8 to 15 feet high swept over the neighbourhood moving at an estimated speed of 35 mph. The force of the wave collapsed buildings and part of the elevated railway system. Some victims died in the wreckage of crushed buildings. Others simply drowned in the thick goo. The holding tank was certainly defective and Purity Distilling was found criminally liable, but the exact cause of the catastrophe was never ascertained.

I had the pleasure of interviewing the governor of my home state of Connecticut the other day in Westport, CT. We were there in memory of the victims who lost their lives on that fateful day.

On July 13, 1966, one of the most horrific crimes in American history occurred: Eight women aged between 21 and 23 were tortured and killed in a Chicago dormitory by Richard Speck. They were all student nurses who were a month away from graduation. The 24-year-old Speck (pictured here at his trial) was a lifelong felon whose lengthy criminal record included violent sexual assaults. On the night of the murders, Speck systematically killed his victims by strangulation or stabbing over a period of several hours. He also raped the eighth victim. Speck may have lost track of how many women were in the dorm room. A potential ninth victim, Cora Amurao, wriggled out of her bindings and hid under a bed while Speck's killing spree went on in another room. Amurao later identified Speck in court. Speck was found guilty and sentenced to die in the Illinois electric chair. The death sentence was later commuted on constitutional grounds. Instead Speck was given a 1,200-year sentence at Statesville Prison. For years Speck denied having any memories of the killings. However, in a 1978 interview he confessed to remembering everything. In a 1988 prison videotape, Speck was seen partying with fellow prisoners who were high on illegal drugs. The video recorded Speck mocking his victims. Portions of the video were broadcast nationally in 1996, increasing the support for capital punishment. By that time Speck was dead; he had died of a heart attack in prison on December 5, 1991, a day before his 50th birthday. No family member came forward to claim his body.
