1933 Adolf Hitler Baby Photo Hoax In 1933, this supposed baby picture of Adolf Hitler circulated in newspapers in England and the United States. When it appeared in the Chicago Tribune in October 1933, the German consulate in that city denounced the photo as a hoax and provided a real baby photo of Hitler (which I posted on this website a little while ago). The hoax photo came from the London Bureau of Acme Newsphotos and originated from an unknown source in Austria. In 1938, Mrs. Harriet Downs of Lakewood, Ohio saw the photo in a magazine and recognized it as a doctored version of a photo of her two-year-old son, John May Warren, taken in 1932! The photo had been deliberately altered to make the child look sinister. How a baby photo from Ohio ended up in the hands of a hoaxer in Austria has never been discovered. Tragically, the boy in this photo died a few months later, at the age of eight, in a bicycle mishap.

America Sister Golden Hair A very good live version. The song is about a man trying to get up the courage to take his girlfriend to the altar to marry, however he is plagued by self-doubts. He pleads for her understanding and re-affirms his love and affection for her, but he says he is not yet ready for the altar. She is only identified as "Sister Golden Hair." He asks her to meet him half-way, which is taken to be a proposal that they live together. The song, while immensely popular, was criticized in conservative circles as a plea for common law marriage and living in sin. This may also have been why the song was so popular with the younger generation. 1975

Hall Of Famers Gather At Toots Shors Here's a terrific photo of a collection of baseball greats as they posed at Toots Shor's New York City restaurant with the proprietor. This was probably taken before they departed for the 1951 Hall of Fame induction ceremonies in Cooperstown. If someone had an autograph book that day and was savvy enough to collect these men's signatures, he could easily retire on what those would be worth today.

End of Benito Mussolini One day before Adolf Hitler committed suicide in his Berlin bunker, Italian fascist leader Benito Mussolini met a more public end. Mussolini and Clara Petacci, his mistress, were caught by communist partisans while trying to flee into Switzerland. On April 29, 1945, the two were shot to death in the small village of Giulino di Mezzegra. Their corpses were then taken to the Piazzale Loreto in Milan and strung up on meat hooks above a gas station. Crowds threw stones at the bodies for several days.

USS Forrestal Burns- July 29 1969 This is clipped from Trial by Fire: A Carrier Burns, a 1973 film produced by the United States Navy about the devastating 1967 fire aboard USS Forrestal off the coast of Vietnam. The film is unique in that it was produced from actual footage of the fire and emergency response efforts, both successful and unsuccessful, taken by on board cameras. Due to the first bomb blast killing nearly all of the specially trained firefighters on the ship, the remaining crew, who had no formal firefighting training, had to improvise. Though there were many firefighting tools available on the Forrestal, including emergency respirators, the general crew was not trained in their use and so were unable to use them correctly. In response to this tragedy, recommendations made were: development of a remote-control fire-fighting system for the flight deck, development of more stable ordnance, improvement in survival equipment, and increased training in emergency response and fire survival. This film has been used to teach new recruits firefighting and emergency response lessons learned in the mishap.

The Invaders This show aired from 67-68 and was cancelled after one and a half seasons. A pre-Internet urban legend (of the missing show kind) has circulated about a hypothetical final episode of the original series. According to that, David Vincent finally manages to convince the authorities and the mainstream of the Invaders' plans, and a massive invasion attempt is successfully thwarted. However, the final scene shows Vincent speaking through a transmitter to a different species of space invaders, to tell them that the coast was now clear. I like this idea of Vincent's fight having taken place in his position as a mercenary of the second alien race. Sounds like an idea Rod Serling would have come up with!
