Salvador Sanchez Tribute One of the most respected and talented boxers of the early 1980s was Mexico's world featherweight champion Salvador Sanchez. Sanchez was killed in an automobile accident in the summer of 1982 at age 23. Here's a tribute, narrated by Howard Cosell, that aired on ABC's Wide World of Sports shortly after Sanchez's death.

Howard Cosell SI Cover Renowned broadcaster Howard Cosell graced the cover of this August 8, 1983 issue of Sports Illustrated. Cosell was already a bit of a has-been by then. Cosell had sworn off pro boxing in 1982. By the end of 1983 he would leave ABC's Monday Night Football broadcasting team too. The 1984 Summer Olympics would be Cosell's broadcasting swansong. He left a legacy of excellence and honesty. You either loved Cosell or hated him. He was regularly voted the most popular sports broadcaster in America--and he was regularly voted the most hated sports broadcaster in America.

1972 Munich Olympic Massacre This edition of Time Magazine chronicled the worst incident in the history of the Olympic Games. On September 5, 1972 a radical terrorist group, Black September, got through ridiculously lax security at the athletes' village in Munich, West Germany simply by wearing track suits and acting like they belonged there. At 4:30 a.m. they took a group of 11 Israeli athletes, coaches, and officials hostage. Two Israelis were killed almost instantly for resisting. The other nine died at the airport where special German anti-terror police got into a gun battle with the terrorists. (One German policeman was killed too.) Up to that time, the 1972 Summer Olympics had been a splendid, friendly affair. The 'openness' of the Games and limited security was deliberate. The West German organizers wanted to erase the memories of the 'Nazified' 1936 Berlin Olympics. Since that awful day, Olympic Games security has become much more efficient and hugely expensive.

Mark Spitz 1972 Olympics The hero of the 1972 Summer Olympic Games in Munich was American Mark Spitz, who won seven gold medals in swimming and set seven world records in the process. Here is an IOC profile of the great Spitz. (His feats are being relegated to the history books because of the sensational exploits of Michael Phelps at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.)

The Ugly Bug Ball Taken from the film 'Summer Magic'. Burl Ives must live in every child of the 50's and 60's. This was one of Disney's best which married nature and a human story together.
