Memories of Danny Kaye Danny was born David Daniel Kaminsky in Brooklyn in 1913, the son of an immigrant Russian tailor. After dropping out of high school he worked for a radio station and later as a comedian in the Catskills. After his solo success in the Catskills, he joined the dancing act of Harvey and Young in 1933. On opening night he lost his balance and the audience broke into a roar of laughter. He would later incorporate this into his act. Enjoying growing popularity in 1939, Danny won over the Broadway crowd that same year with his show-stopping comic singing in "Lady in the Dark," in which he rattled off the names of more than fifty polysyllabic Russian composers in 39 seconds in a song called "Tchaikovsky." Throughout the early 1940's he performed night club acts, on Broadway, and to support the troops overseas during WWII. Though he appeared in his first film in 1937, it wasnít until almost 10 years later that his film career hit its stride. Throughout his career he starred in seventeen movies, including THE KID FROM BROADWAY (1946), THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY (1947), THE INSPECTOR GENERAL (1949), HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN (1952), and the incomparable THE COURT JESTER (1956). In one of his final performances, he proved the versatility of his talent and earned rave reviews for his impassioned portrayal of a Holocaust survivor in the 1981 television movie SKOKIE. In 1987 Danny died of a heart attack in Los Angeles. An amazing actor, singer, dancer, comic, and all-around entertainer, he was a Renaissance man off the stage as well as on, where he was a celebrated chef, a baseball team owner, and an airplane pilot, flying everything from Piper Cubs to Boeing 747ís. His deep and continued commitment to the betterment of the people of the world was an inspiration, and his intelligent humor created a style all his own that made him one of the most beloved entertainers of his time. In a clip from the 1952 film "Hans Christian Andersen", Danny shows off his incredible style with "Inchworm.

How About Garden Opoly as a Christmas Present i recently had a chance to check out Garden-Opoly. This very fun version of Monopoly uses different breeds of plants instead of properties, with POISON IVY replacing MEDITERRANEAN AVE, and Orchids replacing BOARDWALK. Each player buys garden favorites, collects Clay Pots and trades them in for Greenhouses. Sounds easy enough - but add aphid infestation, water bills and a dandelion outbreak and it becomes a little more difficult... and a lot more fun! Each deed back contains interesting facts such as the appropriate climate, soil and watering for each plant, as well as, fun facts about origin, popularity and varieties. A player may even be elected president of the garden club (always wanted to be famous)... or may be WEEDING, and out of the game for three turns! The custom pewter tokens are: a hand trowel, garden clog, garden gnome, wheel barrow and ladybug...i'm the clog...can't keep my shoes on!

Gordon Sinclair The Americans On June 5, 1973, Canadian radio personality Gordon Sinclair delivered this stirring, pro-American editorial. He had written it in 20 minutes. Simply titled The Americans, it followed his noontime newscast on CFRB in Toronto. The response was overwhelmingly positive. Radio stations in Buffalo, New York asked permission to play the broadcast, which was granted. Soon afterwards it swept across the United States. Sinclair's verbatim editorial was made into this recording (with the Battle Hymn of the Republic playing in the background). It reached #23 on the Billboard charts, making the 73-year-old Sinclair the oldest living person to have a Billboard top 40 hit! At Sinclair's request, the proceeds from its sales went entirely to the American Red Cross. When President Ronald Reagan made his first official visit to Canada in 1981, he asked to meet Sinclair. Reagan told Sinclair that his editorial always cheered him up when he was feeling down.

Cam Ranh Bay Vietnam Bob Hope Christmas Show 1968 Bob Hope began entertaining troops in May of 1941, when Bob, with a group of performers, went to March Field, California, to do a radio show for airmen stationed there. He would continue that tradition through peacetime and wartime for another 60 years. On December 22, 1968, Bob's "Operation Holly" performed at Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam. This video records that event. The original film was silent, so the audio from his performance at Long Binh Army Depot that same Christmas has been dubbed onto the video.

Beatles Butcher Album Cover When The Beatles' 1966 album Yesterday And Today was first released, it featured this grisly cover photo with the Fab Four clad in butchers' smocks posed among dismembered dolls and slabs of meat. The public outcry was swift. Some radio stations refused to play any of the album's songs. The albums were recalled after only one day on the shelves and had a different photo pasted on the cover. Recently an unpasted copy of this album sold for more than $10,000.

Carly Simon Nobody Does it Better The theme from the James Bond film, 'The Spy Who Loved Me'. This is Carly's 'Live from Martha's Vineyard, The Classic Concert', in 1988. Years ago I watched a broadcast of her doing a concert inside NYC's Grand Central Station and it absolutely blew me away!

1972 Fischer Spassky World Chess Championship Chess was front page news and on the cover of Time Magazine in the summer of 1972 when American Bobby Fischer challenged world champion Boris Spassky of the Soviet Union. Fischer, 29, had been prominent on the chess scene since 1958 when he won the U.S. championship just before he turned 15. The Soviet Union had dominated international chess for 25 years, but Spassky was bamboozled by Fischer's unpredictable openings. Fischer clinched the 24-game match, held in Reykjavik, Iceland, after 21 games with a record of seven wins, three losses, and eleven draws. Fischer's victory generated tremendous interest in the game in the United States. Known as the 'Fischer Boom,' membership numbers in the U.S. Chess Federation reached their peak in the following two years. The eccentric Fischer never defended his title. He opted to resign as world champion in 1974 when not all of his 64 conditions to defend against Anatoly Karpov were accepted by chess' governing body. Since then Fischer has been a recluse. He did make an appearance in 1992 to play his old rival Spassky in a specially arranged match in Yugoslavia. (This violated UN sanctions against Yugoslavia at the time.) Fischer won the match and proclaimed he was still the legitimate world champion. Despite having Jewish ancestry, Fischer is an anti-Semite and a passionate Holocaust denier. Fischer called a Manila talk-radio station to applaud the 9/11 terrorist attacks in a profanity-filled rant. Fischer now lives in Iceland where he was granted citizenship.

Lindbergh Kidnapping Case 1932 One of the most famous criminal cases in American history was the kidnapping of Charles Lindbergh, Jr., son of the famous aviator. On March 1, 1932, sometime between 8 and 10 p.m., the toddler was snatched from his upstairs nursery at the Lindberghs' still-under-construction retreat home near Hopewell, New Jersey. A note in badly written English was found on the window sill. It demanded $50,000 in ransom for the safe return of the child. A crude homemade ladder was also found leaning against the house. There were few other clues. The case took an odd turn when a 72-year-old good samaritan named John F. Condon took out a newspaper ad volunteering to act as an intermediary to negotiate with the kidnappers. His offer was accepted but neither Lindbergh nor Condon immediately informed the police for fear of putting the child's life in danger. Eventually the money--much of it in rare gold certificates--was paid to a man in a cemetery but the child was not returned. Shortly afterward a child's body was found in a wooded area not far from the Lindbergh home. It was badly decomposed and was identified as the Lindbergh child based on a slight deformity on its right foot. The child had died from a severe skull fracture. Eventually Bruno Richard Hauptmann, a German immigrant with a criminal record in his homeland, was tracked down for spending one of the gold certificates at a gas station. About $15,000 in ransom money was found in his house. Planks from his garage matched the wood used to make the crude ladder. Hauptmann proclaimed his innocence, claiming he was only holding the money for a man named Isador Fisch who had returned to Germany and died there. Hauptmann said he only began spending the money after learning of Fisch's death. Hauptmann was tried, found guilty, and executed in 1936. There is little doubt that Hauptmann was somehow connected with the kidnapping, but there are lingering suspicions that he was assisted by someone who knew the routine and the goings-on at the Lindbergh household. The Lindberghs were not even supposed to be at their Hopewell home on the night of the kidnapping. The kidnapper(s) also had to know precisely when and where the boy would be left unattended.

Aimee Semple McPherson Scandal 1926 Sex scandals involving evangelists are not new. The first one occurred back in 1926, when the leading radio evangelist of the day, Aimee Semple McPherson, was allegedly involved in a doozy with a married man. On May 18, 1926, the 35-year-old McPherson arrived at Ocean Park Beach in California with her secretary for a day of swimming. Shortly after their arrival, McPherson disappeared. McPherson's mother delivered a sermon that night in place of Aimee and informed the congregation that Aimee was 'with Jesus.' The following day, hundreds of concerned parishioners ventured to Ocean Park Beach to look for their beloved Sister Aimee. One parishioner drowned and another died of exposure in the unsuccessful search. Not long after Aimee vanished, Kenneth G. Ormiston, the married engineer of the radio station McPherson owned, also disappeared. Five weeks later, Aimee emerged from the Mexican desert in a town just across the border from Douglas, Arizona. She claimed she had been kidnapped, drugged, tortured, and held for ransom in a shack. Aimee further stated she had escaped from her captors and walked 13 hours through the desert to freedom. Her story was implausible, to say the least. No shack was ever found. Aimee's shoes showed no signs of a 13-hour desert trek. (Moreover, they had grass stains on them!) She was last seen wearing a bathing suit, but reappeared in a dress and wearing a wristwatch she hadn't taken to the beach. Several witnesses claimed they had seen McPherson with Ormiston at various motels during the 35 days she was missing. McPherson and her mother were eventually charged with obstruction of justice, but the charges were dropped early the following year.
