In 1953 running out of postage stamps was apparently grounds for justifiable homicide. No worries! The handy Pitney-Bowes postage meter will prevent office bloodshed.

Dear Brigitte was a 1965 family comedy movie starring James Stewart and Billy Mumy. Stewart plays slightly absent-minded poet/poetry professor Robert Leaf, a man who has no love for anything scientific. His eight-year-old son Erasmus (Mumy) is the opposite of his father--a math prodigy with little talent for anything artistic. Erasmus, apparently more worldly than the average eight-year-old, is obsessed with French movie star Brigitte Bardot. He spends every cent he can acquiring airmail stamps so he can write fan letters to her. (At one point in the film, two college students enlist Erasmus's expertise in math to win at the race track. They pay him for his services in postage stamps!) This is the climactic scene where Erasmus gets to meet Bardot in France.

In 1966 England hosted the quadrennial World Cup soccer finals. On March 20, a few months before the tournament began, the Jules Rimet Trophy (a.k.a. the World Cup) was stolen while being exhibited at Westminster Central Hall. Interestingly, the culprits ignored a priceless array of rare stamps to steal the far-less-valuable trophy. Police quickly received a £15,000 ransom demand. However, when they arrested the culprit, he turned out to be a hoaxer. The trophy was, however, found just seven days later wrapped in newspaper at the bottom of a suburban garden hedge in South London. The finder was a collie dog named Pickles who sniffed out the World Cup while taking a walk with his owner David Corbett. When England won the trophy, Pickles was invited to the celebration banquet and was allowed to lick his owner's bowl. His owner collected a £6,000 reward. The thief was never caught.

You got your windshield cleaned, oil checked, and gas pumped, without asking, all for free, every time? And you didn't pay for air? And, you got trading stamps to boot?
