Fred Astaire and Eleanor Powell Tap Dancing Fred Astaire and Eleanor Powell dancing to Cole Porter's 'Begin the Beguine' was the highlight of 'Broadway Melody', 1940. Narrated by Frank Sinatra. Absolutely smooth! We just don't see talent like this anymore.

Definition This excellent Canadian game show ran for 17 years on CTV from 1973 to 1990. Two teams of two competed. The object of the game was to solve a pun by adding letters to the board. (Many of the clever puns were submitted by viewers.) You might recognize host Jim Perry from his work on American game shows. The smooth-voiced announcer is Dave DeVol who holds the world record for the longest tenure as a TV weatherman. Oh yes: the 26th letter of the alphabet is "zed" in Canada.

Granny Loves Her Winstons I'm sorry, because I loved this show, and partly because I'm a smoker, but having Granny pimping cigarettes so passionately just seems wrong. Listen to how enthusiastic she and Pearl are when they talk about the quality of those deadly coffin nails....oops, I mean the smooth tasting satisfaction of Winston Cigarettes. ;-)

Foster Hewitt Canada's first pioneer sports broadcaster was diminutive Foster Hewitt. His first hockey broadcast was an amateur game between Toronto and Kitchener in 1923--which he did from the penalty box. He became the voice of the Toronto Maple Leafs on Hockey Night In Canada when its radio broadcasts began in 1931. For the next 40 years Hewitt's familiar voice was the most famous in Canada. He regularly began his broadcasts with the phrase, 'Hello, Canada...and hockey fans in the United States and Newfoundland.' Hewitt smoothly made the transition to television in 1952--and his TV broadcasts were still simulcast on radio until 1963. That year his son Bill took over the TV broadcasts; Foster continued hockey broadcasts on the radio until 1970. Hewitt was lured out of retirement to call the historic Canada-Russia series in 1972. He was given the Order of Canada that same year. Hewitt died in 1985 at the age of 82.
