Mel Ott Fatal Car Crash On November 14, 1958 baseball Hall-of-Famer Mel Ott and his wife were seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. (The car in the photo was Ott's.) According to news reports, Ott, the former New York Giants slugger, pulled onto a fog-shrouded road and was struck by an oncoming vehicle whose 50-year-old driver died at the scene. A week later Ott died in a New Orleans hospital from his numerous injuries. He was just 49. Two other New York Giants' Hall-of-Famers, Frankie Frisch and Carl Hubbell, also died in similar car accidents. Hubbell died exactly 30 years to the day after Ott's death!

Traci Lords Scandal 1986 One of the more salacious scandals of the 1980s involved pornographic movie star Nora Louise Kuzma, better known to skin-flick aficionados as Traci Lords. In July 1986, during a comprehensive federal investigation into the pornography industry, authorities received an anonymous tip: Traci Lords, the hugely popular actress, had just turned 18 years old--meaning her meteoric two-year porn career had begun at the illegal and tender age of 16, perhaps even 15. It was true. Her mother's ex-boyfriend had provided Traci with a fake ID that added more than five years to Lords' age, giving her a November 1962 birthdate instead of May 1968. (Her physical attributes so belied her true age that Lords was also able to illegally obtain a California driver's license and a passport.) Mom's ex arranged some nude modelling gigs for Lords, including photos for Penthouse. Within a short time, Lords was Penthouse's Pet of the Month--an issue that outsold all others in the publication's history. She quickly graduated to hard-core films at a time when the home video market was exploding. Lords appeared in about 80 porn flicks and became enormously popular for her enthusiastic performances. 'I get paid for doing things I like,' Lords told an interviewer. Lords claims she only made 21 films (and earned about $35,000 for her services), but dozens of other movies were created from outtakes and reused footage. According to porn industry insiders, however, Lords was making six movies a month, demanding and getting $1,000 per day from producers (about twice the going rate for hard-core porn actresses at the time). Some sources claim Lords made over $1 million from her XXX-rated movies--and even had video companies give her $10,000 a month and provide her with a furnished apartment and a Mercedes. Before the scandal broke, her movies were outselling her nearest rival's by a 10:1 ratio. One film, 'Traci, I Love You,' was made in Europe a few days after her eighteenth birthday by her own newly formed production company, and is thus the only porno movie of hers that can be legally obtained or viewed in North America. Some of her 'banned' films are still available in Europe where laws and the age of sexual consent vary. (In France, for example, it is illegal for someone under the age of 18 to appear in a pornographic movie, but the film itself is not illegal.) The huge scandal resulted in more stringent age verification for porn participants that still exist today. Because of accusations that producers had lured Lords into the business knowing she was a minor, the entire adult film industry verged on collapse. However, Lords had also fooled the federal government with the same fake I.D. to get a U.S. passport, so prosecution efforts were halted. Suspicion lingers that it was Lords herself who tipped off authorities to her true age in order to increase her fame and eliminate her old films from the marketplace once she began her own production company. Lords, shown here in a 2008 photo, has pursued a career as a 'serious actress' since 1986. She has appeared in various films and TV sitcoms, usually typecast as 'the bad girl.'

Froggy - Our Gang Billy (Froggy) Laughlin was added to the Our Gang cast in 1940 after an MGM executive heard him do a Popeye imitation at a movie theater. From 1940 through the end of the series in 1944 Laughlin played the cross-eyed, bespectacled Froggy, a character who spoke in a croaky voice. (Many Our Gang fans still mistakenly assume that was Laughlin's true voice!) Laughlin was tragically killed on August 31, 1948 in La Puente, CA. While delivering newspapers on a motor scooter with a friend, the pair made an unsafe U-turn and were struck by a truck whose driver had no time to react. Laughlin's friend suffered only minor injuries in the mishap. Laughlin was just 16 years old.

Our Gang - Waldo Darwood Kaye played Waldo in the Our Gang shorts from 1937 to 1940. The bookish and officious Waldo was usually a minor character, although he also pursued the fair Darla. His first speaking part was in Hearts are Thumps (1937). His last was Waldo's Last Stand (1940). He had a few movie roles outside of the Our Gang series, including one alongside Lucille Ball. Following his acting days, Darwood became an ordained minister with the Seventh-Day Adventist church. He worked at various missions, including ones in Thailand. Sadly Darwood met a tragic end. On May 15, 2002, he was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver while walking on a sidewalk near his home in Riverside, California. He was 72 years old.

Daddy Cool Boney M Passes At Age 61 Bobby Farrell, whose group Boney M topped the 1970s European charts with its glittering showmanship and blend of disco and Calypso music, was found dead in his hotel bed Thursday while on tour in Russia, his agent said. He was 61. The frontman appeared as scheduled in St. Petersburg Wednesday night, but complained of breathing problems before and after his show, said the agent, John Seine. The group had 38 top 10 hits, including 15 number ones in Germany. They included "Brown Girl in the Ring" and "Mary's Boychild." Their version of "By the Rivers of Babylon" sold nearly 2 million records in Britain alone, keeping it No. 1 for five weeks in 1978.

Rick Martin 1951-2011 Hockey fans were saddened to hear of the passing of Rick Martin, 59, one of the National Hockey League's most lethal snipers during the 1970s. The popular and fun-loving Martin combined with Gilbert Perreault and Rene Robert to form the high-scoring French Connection line that led the Buffalo Sabres to the Stanley Cup finals in 1975. According to media reports, Martin was felled by a heart attack while driving alone in the Buffalo suburb of Clarence, NY on Sunday, March 13, 2011. Witnesses say they saw the car's driver, later identified as Martin, keel over at the wheel. His car crossed the center line, crashed into a utility pole, and slid into a tree. Bystanders and police attempted to revive Martin to no avail. In an NHL career that totalled 685 regular-season games from 1971 to 1981, Martin scored 384 goals and added 317 assists. In 63 playoff games, Martin tallied 24 goals and collected 29 assists.
