Harold Lloyd on Whats My Line From April 26, 1953, silent film comedian Harold Lloyd is the mystery guest on What's My Line. He promotes the re-release of his 1925 cassic comedy The Freshman. (Take a close look when Lloyd shakes hands with the panelists at the end of the clip; you can see there is no thumb on his right hand. This disfigurement was caused when a prop bomb exploded in his hand early in his career.)

Lynn Swann Leaps Car in NFL Game From a 1979 Cleveland-Pittsburgh NFL game at Three Rivers Stadium: Steelers' wide receiver Lynn Swann goes deep for a pass...and ends up having to leap over a parked car! (At the time the Pittsburgh Steelers had an automobile company as a sponsor.) After this incident, the promotional cars were moved far away from the field!

Jim Stafford - My Girl Bill From 1974, Jim Stafford gives a live performance of his quirky song My Girl Bill on British TV. This song actually got to number 12 on the US charts and number seven in Canada. From my experience listening to oldies stations, it's rarely heard nowadays. When My Girl Bill was first released, some radio stations banned it for promoting homosexuality. It doesn't, of course, as the last stanza explains.

TV Flop - Chuck Barris Rah-Rah Show Despite Chuck Barris and NBC constantly clashing over the content of The Gong Show, the network was desperate for any prime-time hit in the late 1970s. Therefore, in early 1978, the zany Barris was permitted to create and host The Chuck Barris Rah-Rah Show--an hour-long variety program that featured guest appearances by celebrities and encore performances by some of the more memorable oddball acts from The Gong Show. Few people saw it as it was scheduled on Tuesdays from 8 to 9 p.m--directly against the two most popular TV shows in America at the time: Happy Days and Laverne & Shirley. It was cancelled in April after eight episodes had aired. Noel Holsten, the Orlando Sentinel-Star's TV critic, wrote, "[Barris] reeled around the stage as though he'd been gobbling hallucinogenic mushrooms and looking somewhat like a subterranean fungus." Barris accepted Holsten's bad review with cheerfulness: He read it during an episode of The Gong Show. (The Gong Show was booted off NBC in June.) Here's a brief promo for the February 28 premiere episode of the Rah-Rah Show.

AT&T Archives: Design Line Promo (1977) The wonderful thing about this video is how horribly the styles have held up over the years. From the music, to the outfits, to the furniture, it is all a train wreck of style and I love it. I miss 1977.
