Featured Member -Nbmike Hi everyone. My name is Michael “Nbmike” Cormier. I will be turning 44 yrs old this summer, so while I may not be as old as the trees, unicorns, and dinosaurs, I’m definitely older than Compact Discs, MP3 Players, and Plasma TV. I am a single dad to my beautiful daughter Rhiannon (She thinks she’s 14 going on 40, which makes me often feel like I’m 80 lol). Ever since I found this site in November, I have enjoyed the trivia and memories found here. The people here are top notch at providing info when your memory kind of escapes you. I want to thank you all for welcoming me so warmly the last few months, and a big thanks to Steve for creating such a great site. OK, a little about me. I was born here in Saint John, NB Canada in 1965. I grew up in a small community outside of Saint John called Grand Bay, and lived there until I moved to the big city,(lol ….big city for NB, population, 70000 or so) In 1984, I started working as a radio announcer in town doing weekend and swing shifts. The job lasted a couple of years, but started a lifelong love with musical trivia, or even trivia in general. It was there that I found out about such things as plagiarism (Brian Wilson can say it was unintentional, but SURFIN USA just sounds like Chuck Berry’s SWEET LITTLE SIXTEEN with new lyrics)! We also played vinyl records back in those days, so I kinda feel like a dinosaur sometimes. lol After leaving the radio announcing job, I became a jack of all trades, until nagging back problems left me unemployed in 1994, and now I concentrate on raising my child and trying to develop projects. I have always had an interest in writing comedy, and have written some musical parodies that have made a few people laugh on a few occasions. I’m not egotistical about my writing by any means, but I have a rule of thumb. If I’m not laughing when I write the lyrics, then I keep running scenarios through my mind until I find the funniest scenario to me. I figure if I don’t find my writing funny, then how is anybody else supposed to? My hometown has some Hollywood connections. Louis B Mayer’s family moved here from overseas when he was a small child, and he grew up here until he left for Massachusetts when in his late teens, Actor Walter Pidgeon was born and raised here, as well as Lyman Ward, who played Ferris Beuller’s father, and Donald Sutherland was born here, but moved to Nova Scotia with his family when he was a teen. One Hollywood story I have heard is when Walter Pidgeon screen tested for MGM, Louis B Mayer thought he was sucking up to him, and summoned him to his office, and told him in no uncertain terms, that if Walter thought of putting Saint John NB as his hometown was going to gain him favor in Mayer’s eyes, it wasn’t going to work. When he told Mr.Mayer that Saint John WAS his hometown, then they had a laugh together. I am desperately shy in real life, but online I come out of my shell usually. I love participating here, just wish I had more time to contribute. Raising a teenager is like studying for a long and hard exam. You hope you have all the right answers, and you spend every waking hour trying to prepare for what’s coming up, but deep in your heart, you know you’re just flying without a net and hoping for the best, but I wouldn’t trade her for the world. The funny thing is that twenty years ago, I never though I had what it takes to be a Dad. I look forward to meeting new members and continuing to engage in trivia challenges and sharing memories with all. Thanks again for such a warm welcome here.

John Denver Rocky Mountain High In 1972, Denver scored his first top ten album, with Rocky Mountain High, while its title track reached the Top Ten in 1973. In 1974, "Sunshine on My Shoulders" and "Annie's Song" both went to number one, and "Back Home Again" made it to number five. In 1975, he again had two number ones, "Thank God I'm A Country Boy" and "Calypso/I'm Sorry," and a top twenty hit, "Sweet Surrender." Key to Denver's success were his many appearances on television, which in the pre-MTV era of the 1970s, with his long blond hair, embroidered 'western' shirts, affable manner & granny glasses, made him one of the first truly "tele-genic" pop stars. In subsequent years, Denver had a lower-profile career. He had a few more U.S. Top 30 hits as the 1970s ended, but nothing to match the success he enjoyed earlier. As his career slowed down, Denver focused more on humanitarian and sustainability work. He worked extensively on conservation projects and helped to create the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska. On October 12, 1997, Denver was killed when the Long-EZ aircraft he was piloting crashed just off the coast of California at Pacific Grove, shortly after taking off from the Monterey Peninsula Airport.

Americas Sweetheart at 61 Happy Birthday to Sally Field! Sally is the daughter of actress Margaret Field and step-father Jock Mahoney, also an actor as well as a stuntman. Sally managed to finish high school, but early on it was clear she would follow in her parents' footsteps, and she soon got the lead role in the 1965 TV series "Gidget", quickly followed by "The Flying Nun" which ran from 1967-1970. American was in love with her wholesome, girl-next-door persona. The role that got Sally noticed as a more serious dramatic actress, was her portrayal of the title character in the TV movie Sybil, a woman suffering from a multiple personality disorder. The part won her an Emmy in the Best Actress category in 1976. Hollywood now saw Sally Field as more than just a pretty face. She had raw talent they were more than happy to exploit. But Sally didn't altogether abondon her comedic side and proved this by starring opposite Burt Reynolds in the two Smokey And The Bandit films. Nevertheless, her best work came through in dramatic roles, and Sally went on to win Oscars in the Best Actress category for both Norma Rae and Places In The Heart. Aside from acting, she has also produced and directed several projects for television, including directing an episode of the acclaimed mini-series, From The Earth To The Moon. Sally has two sons from her first marriage, Peter and Eli. And Samuel, from her second marriage.

Disneys Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was first released in 1937. It was the first animated feature film produced by Walt Disney. It was the first full-length animated feature to become widely successful within the English-speaking world, and the first to be filmed in Technicolor. It made its premiere at the Carthay Circle Theater on December 21, 1937, and was released to theaters by RKO Radio Pictures on February 4, 1938. Walt Disney had to literally fight to get the film produced. Both his brother Roy, and his wife, Lillian, attempted to talk him out of it, and the Hollywood movie industry mockingly referred to the film as 'Disney's Folly' while it was in production. He even had to mortgage his house to help finance the film's production, which eventually ran up a total cost of just over $1.5 million, a whopping sum for a feature film in 1937. It has been well documented that Adolf Hitler watched this film with a room full of children, and was delighted by Disney's adaptation of the German fairy tale. In fact, Hitler offered Disney anything he wanted in exchange for Disney's creation of feature-length animated features in Germany. Though this is the basis for the 'Walt Disney is a Nazi' rumors, Disney's biographer Bob Thomas proved that Disney declined Hitler's invitation, and in fact soon entered production on such anti-German projects as 'Der Fuhrer's Face' and 'Victory Through Air Power'.

Mike Tyson SI Cover There was once a time when Mike Tyson was a positive force for boxing. He was six months shy of his 20th birthday when he first appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated in 1986 billed as 'Kid Dynamite.' Tyson's story made good copy: He was a tough kid from the projects who was more or less adopted by boxing guru Cus D'Amato and turned into a champion with frightening power. D'Amato also instilled in Tyson a love of boxing history--a rare commodity among modern pugilists. D'Amato died not long afterwards. So did another one of Tyson's handlers, Jim Jacobs. Tyson wed actress Robin Givens, but the marriage was a disaster. Things spiralled downward from that point...

Tragic Child Actress Judith Barsi Judith Barsi was a prolific child actress who appeared in at least 72 commercials and a handful of movies and TV shows before her horrifying death at age 10 in 1988. Barsi was spotted by a talent scout at a skating rink when she was nearly six years old. He mistook her for a three-year-old. Extremely tiny for her age, she was able to play much younger roles. At age 10 she was only 3'8" tall. Excellent at understanding precisely what directors wanted from her, Barsi appeared in commercials advertising McDonald's restaurants, peanut butter, orange juice, potato chips, soup, and dolls. It is estimated that she was earning close to $100,000 a year from her acting gigs. Fans of the sitcom Cheers will recall Barsi playing the role of a new bartender's adorable little daughter in a 1986 episode titled Relief Bartender (see photo). One of Barsi's last projects was providing the voice of Ducky in the 1988 animated film The Land Before Time. Barsi's home life was a nightmare: Her father, Jozsef, had fled communist Hungary. He was a violent alcoholic who mentally and physically abused Judith and her mother Maria, who was also refugee from Hungary. Judith had told fellow actors that her father had threatened to kill her on several occasions. On July 25, 1988, Barsi was shot to death by her father while she slept in the family's Los Angeles home. He also killed his wife. He stayed with the bodies for two days before burning them and turning his gun on himself. Barsi was supposed to audition for another role on the day she was murdered.
