This commercial was shot at the Liverpool Street Subway Station in London 5 weeks ago Jan 15, 2009. Only the dancers knew what was happening; the general public didn't have a clue what was about to unfold.

Ralph McTell's song has been recorded by many artists. This is one of those songs that tug at the heart strings. Every City no matter where has it's underbelly that the tourists usually don't see. Though many circumstances make people homeless please remember they are still people and there for the grace of God go you or I.

Nearly 900 episodes of the classic Sunday night CBS version of What's My Line were made between 1950 and 1967. Host John Daly only missed four of them. Here's one of the four: Actress Julie London is the mystery challenger as regular panelist Bennett Cerf pinch hits for the vacationing John Daly on September 29, 1957.

I found this remarkable photo on a British news website. It was taken today (November 11, 2008) at the British Armistice Day service in London. It shows three of the four surviving British First World War veterans. From left to right: 112-year-old Henry Allingham, 110-year-old Harry Patch, and 108-year-old Bill Stone. Allingham was an aviator, Patch was in the army, Stone was in the navy. (The fourth surviving veteran, 107-year-old Claude Choules, lives in Australia.)

The Biophone was a radio system seen in the TV series Emergency! The Biophone was used by field paramedics, usually firefighters or ambulance attendants. The phone was capable of broadcasting voice and EKGs to a base unit, usually a hospital so they could speak to doctors supervising them but I always preferred it when the nurse played by Julie London answered and handled the call. The biophone on the right is the same one used in the TV show and is now on display at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC.

The British love a good sex scandal or a good political scandal, so the combination of the two was irresistible in 1963. That year it was revealed that John Profumo, the British Secretary of State for War, who was married, had, in 1961, been having an affair with a much younger showgirl named Christine Keeler (pictured here). What made this especially troublesome for Profumo was that Keeler had also been liberally sharing her renowned horizontal pleasures with Yevgeny Ivanov, a naval attache to the Soviet Union's London embassy. During the height of the Cold War, the potential for dangerous pillow talk was a bigtime security breach. When the affair leaked out, Profumo at first denied the charges in parliament. Three months later he admitted they were true and was forced to resign. His prime minister, Harold MacMillan, himself resigned due to poor health a month later. It was undoubtedly exacerbated by the priapic shenanigans of Profumo. Keeler didn't come out of the scandal unscathed: She served nine months in the sneezer for perjury. The British government's report on the scandal became a national best-seller.
