Legendary comedian David Brenner has died at the age of 78 ... and he went out with a joke.
Brenner's rep says David passed away peacefully Saturday evening at his NYC home surrounded by family.
As TMZ previously reported ... Brenner slipped into a coma this week after his cancer got aggressive and started spreading rapidly.
D.B. holds the record for most "Tonight Show" appearances with 158 couch sessions. He also hosted the show a handful of times.
We're told David had one final request -- $100 in small bills be placed in his sock -- and said it was "just in case tipping is recommended where I'm going."

"(Ghost) Riders in the Sky: A Cowboy Legend" is a country and cowboy-style song. It was written on June 5, 1948 by Stan Jones. A number of versions were crossover hits on the pop charts in 1949. The ASCAP database lists the song as "Riders in the Sky" (title code: 480028324), but the title has been written as "Ghost Riders", "Ghost Riders in the Sky", and "A Cowboy Legend".
[#2 country, #1 pop, 1949] Bucky Pizzarelli and Don Costa were on the original recording session in Chicago.
The song tells a folk tale of a cowboy who has a vision of red-eyed, steel-hooved cattle thundering across the sky, being chased by the spirits of damned cowboys. One warns him that if he does not change his ways, he will be doomed to join them, forever "trying to catch the Devil's herd across these endless skies". Jones said that he had been told the story when he was 12 years old by an old cowboy friend. The story resembles the northern European mythic Wild Hunt.
The melody is based on the song "When Johnny Comes Marching Home". According to Robby Krieger, it inspired the classic Doors song "Riders on the Storm".
The song was also the inspiration for the Marvel Comics Western character "Ghost Rider" later renamed Phantom Rider (not to be confused with the later character named "Ghost Rider").

Gunilla Hutton was the Swedish singer/dancer who was the second actress to play eldest sister Billie Jo Bradley on Petticoat Junction. She was also a regular on Hee Haw for many years; her character was appropriately named Nurse Goodbody. Less well known is Hutton's involvement with Nat King Cole. At age 20, she began a romantic tryst with the legendary singer, who was 47, while she toured with his show. Had the public learned about it at the time (1964), the interracial affair and their age difference would have been a major scandal. Still, Cole was prepared to divorce Maria, his wife of 21 years, but ill health entered the equation. Cole was diagnosed with advanced lung cancer. Knowing he had only a short time to live, Cole opted to stay with his wife instead of Hutton.

In March of 1969, Judy married her fifth husband, Mickey Devinko, better known as Mickey Deans. They lived together in England in a tiny mews house in Chelsea. During the evening of Saturday, June 21 1969, Judy and Mickey were watching television when they had an argument. Judy ran out the door into the street, screaming and waking the neighbors. A phone call for Judy woke Mickey at 10:40 the next morning; Judy was not sleeping in the bed. Mickey searched for her, only to find the bathroom door locked. After no response, he climbed outside to the bathroom window and entered to find Judy, sitting on the toilet. Rigor mortis had already set in. Judy Garland was dead at the age of 47.
The official cause of death, according to the death certificate shown here, was accidental barbituate poisoning (quinalbarbitone).
The day Judy died, legend has it, there was a tornado in Kansas.
