Sir Douglas Quintet Shes About a Mover 1965 In 1965, the Sir Douglas Quintet was formed and the group's name was chosen in an effort to make the band seem British to benefit from the British invasion. This image had its problems, particularly Doug Sahm's Texas accent and that two fifths of the band were of Mexican origin. The band had a top 20 US hit with the song "She's About a Mover" and a number of lesser hit over the years. The SDQ broke up after a bust for marijuana possession in Corpus Christi, TX, and Doug moved to San Francisco, forming the Honkey Blues Band before reforming the new SDQ with a new lineup was resigned and they released the successful single and album "Mendocino". The record contained the song "At the Crossroad" with the legendary Doug Sahm line "You just can't live in Texas if you don't have a lot of soul".

Alcohol is Dynamite Another Sid Davis production. A classic scare-tactics short film about not allowing minors to purchase beer. Davis was a US social guidance film director and producer whose films during the 50's and 60's included driver safety, marijuana use, heroin addiction, gang warfare, and several others.

Lopez Vs Malvarez 1978 Some months ago I posted a 1979 Sports Illustrated cover featuring exciting world featherweight champion Danny 'Little Red' Lopez. Here he is defending his title against Argentina's Juan Malvarez on September 15, 1978 in a short but dramatic contest. Lopez was a notoriously slow starter who often got decked early by his opponent. Lopez would invariably roar back and score a knockout...like he did here.

Marilyn Bell Swims Lake Ontario On September 9, 1954, Canadian teenager Marilyn Bell became the first person to swim across Lake Ontario. Some 300,000 onlookers witnessed her arrival near the Canadian National Exhibition grounds in Toronto 20 hours and 59 minutes after Bell began her swim in Youngstown, NY. Bell's feat was actually made in defiance of CNE organizers who had offered a $10,000 prize solely to American marathon swimmer Florence Chadwick. (Chadwick abandoned her effort after becoming ill. The CNE did award Bell the cash.) The straight-line distance of the swim was about 32 miles. Bell, who was a month shy of her seventeenth birthday, swam an estimated 40 miles while battling fifteen-foot waves and lamprey eels. Bell later swam both the English Channel and the Strait of Juan de Fuca before retiring from marathon swimming in 1958.
