Television shows like American Idol are hardly new. From 1947 thorugh 1970, Ted Mack's Original Amateur Hour gave aspiring performers a chance to display their talents in front of a television audience. (Viewers were encouraged to vote for their favorite acts--by postcard!) This is a 1967 Ted Mack clip of eight-year-old Irene Cara singing.

This is a shot from the 1935 black and white movie starring Irene Dunne as a deposed White Russian princess who has become a famed Parisian couturier. Dunne is the partner of "Roberta" (Helen Westley), who passes away, leaving her half of the business to American football player Randolph Scott—who of course knows next to nothing about the gown business, and couldn't care less anyway.
Keep an eye out for a blond Lucille Ball as a fashion model. . .

In 1970 a sensational book, Amelia Earhart Lives, was published by McGraw-Hill. Its author, Joe Klaas, claimed the woman in this photograph, Irene Bolan, was actually missing aviator Amelia Earhart! Klaas claimed that Earhart's attempted round-the-world flight and disappearance was part of an elaborate pre-Second World War spy mission orchestrated by the U.S. government. Klaas' tale was based on information received by Major Joseph Gervais. Gervais had a chance encounter with Bolan at a 1965 air show and was surprised by the resemblance between Bolan and Earhart (who had vanished over the Pacific Ocean in 1937). Klass further asserted that modern photographic analysis techniques proved that Bolan and Earhart had identical facial features--right down to the tear ducts. Bolan was a pilot too, but skeptics doubted Klass' claim. An outraged Bolan sued McGraw-Hill for $1.5 million. The book was pulled and the parties settled out of court. Still, there are some people who think Klaas was right...

The 1927 Chicago White Sox were baseball's version of a soap opera. During spring training in Shreveport, LA, popular center fielder Johnny Mostil attempted suicide with a razor. He was discovered in a booster's hotel room lying in a pool of his own blood. Several teammates administered first aid, got him medical treatment and saved his life. (Two Shreveport doctors later sued Mostil and the White Sox for non-payment of $6,000 in medical bills.) What prompted Mostil's out-of-the-blue suicide attempt? The official team statement said Mostil was feeling the negative effects of a painful bout of neuritis. However, the whispers were much more interesting. Mostil was rumored to be having an affair with Irene Faber, the wife of White Sox pitcher Red Faber. Shortly after the suicide attempt, Mostil's girlfriend, Margaret Caroll, began dating Bill Barrett, another White Sox player. The two eventually married. Mostil did not play until September. By 1929 his career was over. He died in 1970.
